6 Hours of Spa: Hour 6 (the finish)

Kazuki Nakajima continues to lead over Andre Negrao.  Sebastien Buemi will take over Toyota #8 as they are on their final pit stop, in the lane right now.  They've been relatively reliable for a new car in their first race.  #36 has the lead, and the Jota car nearly chops the Alpine!  That was so close through Eau Rouge!  That was a heart in the throat moment!  Egad!  Was that Tom Blomqvist or Anthony Davidson?  Bang!  There was contact!  Jeepers creepers!  Now, the Toyota is back on track, 37 seconds behind Negrao who needs a stop, but not a full fuel tank.  

Niklas Nielsen is now driving as the Gold rated driver in the #83 AF Corse Ferrari.  Felipe Fraga in the Aston Martin is 2.8 seconds ahead, in the #33.  Alessio Picariello is next up in the #88 Dempsey Proton Porsche 911 RSR-19.  Kamui Kobayashi moves up to third place.  Now, #7 goes off the road, again, under braking, downhill through Pouhon, Stavelot, Fangnes, and those particular turns.  Maybe it was the Brussels hairpin, Bruxelles.  The hybrid braking recuperation of energy on that Toyota needs improvement and they will work on it.  Pit stop time for the Iron Dames Ferrari as well as the Dempsey Proton Porsche and the Cetilar Ferrari.  Fastest lap for Sebastien Buemi in the #8 Toyota, 2:03.930, much quicker than Andre Negrao, who maybe has been caught up in traffic.

Buemi has to make up 30 seconds in the span of 48 minutes.  Buemi is told he is allowed to use the traction control as much as possible.  The leading Alpine of Andre Negrao still needs a pit stop.  Final stop for the #88 Dempsey Proton Porsche.  That's the Haryanto/Piccariello/Seefried car.  Porsche in the lane with #92.  Four tires and fuel.  Survive five hours and see where you are with a top driver and a brand spanking new set of boots.  Kevin Estre is going to finish out the race for the Porsche factory.  #91, the sister car, will have an uphill battle in the next five or so races in 2021.  The Porsche's have a rear exiting exhaust instead of side exiting exhaust, making the cars slightly quieter.

Jota and Jota battle, the team cars.  Tom Blomqvist vs. Anthony Davidson.  Blomqvist, a former BMW factory driver, now in the WEC after also racing in the four race Asian Le Mans Series back in February.  If you're going to go, go now.  Racing Team Nederland, RealTeam, and InterEuropol, along with DragonSpeed are all in the lane for LMP2.  Richard Mille Racing is back up to eighth with Sophia Floresch.  We have a number of other LMP2 cars in the fight toward the back half of the top ten in class.  

Neel Jani has enjoyed his first GTE race for Porsche, sharing with Kevin Estre of course.  A tire puncture for the leading #36 Alpine.  They are in the window, and they can do a tire change, add fuel, and go to the end with just 38 minutes on the board.  Kamui Kobayashi is two minutes back.  These guys complete their pit stop and they've only done a two tire stop for right sides, to save time.  Now they are behind the #8 Toyota.  The unladen right front tire is doing a lot of heavy lifting on the Alpine.  Buemi in the Toyota is good to the end on fuel for the #8.

They are in the pound seats to save petrol before this race is done and dusted.  There's loads of daylight between #8 and #36 as the Alpine heads up the hill from Stavelot, now called Courbe Paul Frere named after the motor racing journalist.  Kamui Kobayashi knows he does not need another outbraking moment.  Phil Hanson started the race for United Autosport car #22, and they've topped the timesheets in LMP2.  With 35 minutes left, Hanson says, "endurance racing has it's rituals and I don't want to say too much yet."  He knows Filipe Albuquerque is giving it a good drive on the road.  

Fabio Scherer, the new driver for the team, has run very well, too.  We also watch in LMP2, the scrap between Tom Blomqvist and Anthony Davidson.  Tom Blomqvist has moved up.  Davidson passes the #98 Aston Martin with Augusto Farfus at the controls.  Ben Hanley is reeling in Alex Brundle in LMP2 and they are in it for the Pro Am Challenge.  Anthony Davidson needs to pass the orsche before Eau Rouge, and no dice.  He pokes his nose out trying to find clean air.  Blomqvist has the space.  There's daylight between those cars.  

46.6 seconds the gap bettwen Andre Negrao and Kamui Kobayashi I believe.  Sebastien Buemi is actually still leading.  Nyck Nielsen leads GTE Am and is nine seconds behind the Porsche of Gianmaria Bruni which is caboose on the field in GTE Pro.  There's still drama to come, perhaps.  We shall see.  Ah.  Trouble for Jaxon Evans in the #77 Dempsey Proton Porsche, stopping at Brussels hairpin.  That's at Les Combes actually, and there's electrical drama on that Porsche.  Power issues.  He is doing a Control, Alt, Delete.  This is on the side of the circuit that begins going downhill.  Sascha Maassen, former Porsche driver, he is now a manager for the Porsche Junior drivers.

Nicklas Nielsen leads GTE Am.  Gianmaria Bruni will still need one more pit stop.  Points for Bruni and Lietz will be for sixth I believe in the driver's championship.  Ooh dear!  Anthony Davidson scrapes the tire barrier!  Wow!  Nicklas Nielsen has just passed one of his competitors.  Francois Perrodo has had good luck winning the first race of the season in WEC over the years.  Full Course Yellow coming up for recovering the GTE car.  Kamui Kobayashi dives for the lane for service.  25 laps done on his stint.  He was bang on the limit of his fuel window.

Buemi in the sister Toyota is in good shape right now.  Full Course Yellow for marshals intervening to rescue car #88.  This is a quick yellow.  Brendon Hartley says he has been surprised by being in LMP2 battles changing the traffic dynamics entirely from the TS050 LMP1 car.  Toyota have kept the cars on the road and Hartley is happy about leading with 20+ minutes left to run.  Hartley is confident his co-driver can bring it home.  Kamui Kobayashi, though, has stopped at the top of the hill at Les Combes.  This #7 car has been the problem child all weekend.  Kobayashi is trying to recycle the car.

He power cycles the car.  Are United Autosport in the catbird seat for an overall podium?  We'll see.  #8 has now completed 152 laps, 656 miles.  Kobayashi is moving again.  20 seconds to the end of Full Course Yellow as the two Jota cars pit for fuel before we go green.  Sebastien Buemi and Toyota, they have really pulled stuff together as the first Hypercar to roll a wheel.  We could see the new Glickenhaus either next time out at Portimao in Portugal, or, at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.  We have 15 minutes left.  Two fundamentally different cars are running 1-2, less than a second apart.

RealTeam are seventh behind DragonSpeed, and Sophia Floresch will likely finish eighth for Richard Mille Racing.  Floresch has Anders Fjordbach on her tail as well.  No more energy target for Sebastien Buemi.  Stroke it through to the end.  Anthony Davidson is booking it right now, 20 seconds behind Tom Blomqvist, carving four seconds out of that gap.  What does he have left in the locker?  Kevin Estre and Neel Jani are bang on the money in GTE Pro.  Drive through penalty, though, for the #38 car for dangerous driving.  Itwas #28 though, Tom Blomqvist.  That will need to be reviewed.

Mr. Freitas, is your information correct?  The plot thickens.  They've penalized the wrong automobile.  Anthony Davidson is still taking time out of Tom Blomqvist.  Sebastien Buemi leading the motor race into the last ten minutes.  Until you are past the checkered flag, you are far from being home and hosed.  The United Autosports car overshoots the Bus Stop, on the bumps, taking a certain line.  He locks the front tires.  Race Control have revised the penalty and that's now applied to Tom Blomqvist in the #28 Jota Sport car.  Anthony Davidson is in the clear.  A drive through penalty should see Blomqvist and company on the podium, behind is the #29 Racing Team Nederland automobile.

Full Course Yellow again?  Wait a minute.  We have some penalties, under investigation cars anyway, for DragonSpeed #21, Corvette Racing #63, and yours truly can't remember the third one.  7:30 P.M., half past seven Central European Summer Time, as this race draws to a close.  DragonSpeed in and out.  #28 in and out.  Drive through for #28 and also for #21 I believe.  Frits van Eerd has done really well, along with Job van Uitert and Giedo van der Garde.  #88 will be penalized and will have to be taken or have it assesssed.  Cetilar will be on the podium, and AF Corse #54 will also be in the penaltyu box as the #63 Corvette takes their medicine.

Was there a puncture for the DragonSpeed #21 car.  This is a quick dash for DragonSpeed.  Toyota have had to push, but now, they seem to be in the clear, and they will finish first and third in their Le Mans Hypercar debut.  Alpine, again, can't take as much fuel compared to Toyota of course.  Phil Hanson and United Autosport are in the pound seats for LMP2.  InterEuropol and RealTeam are going to be satisfied.  Final lap.  We are coming to the end of the race as the Alpine passes the AF Corse Ferrari.  #777, Tomonobu Fujii has also run really well today after being on the final row of the grid.  

Brendon Hartley, Kazuki Nakajima, and Sebastien Buemi will win for Toyota in Le Mans Hypercar!  They have had a stunning debut of the category and will reap the rewards with a pole and a win!

6 Hours of Spa: Hour 5

An off course excursion into the dust for Kamui Kobayashi in Toyota #7.  Oliver Gavin has stepped out of a Corvette for the final time in his career.  So much emotion for him, thinking about what has happened in the 20 years he has had with Corvette Racing.  A great race, and a great track.  Oliver Gavin has been amazed by his experience and he's loved racing at Le Mans 18 times with Corvette and win five of those races.  His career in racing is not over.  He is setting up the driving school, the Oliver Gavin Driving Academy, and he will use Chevrolet Corvette C8's for the driving school.  Allan McNish congratulates Oliver Gavin.  Oh dear!  Toyota #7 is off the road from the lead, way too quick, into the gravel heading for a lockup into La Source?  Yikes.

Alpine lead the motor race.  Just before we saw all this happen, there was an off course excursion, and he needs to be pulled out of there.  He's stuck in the gravel trap.  Wait for a tow truck, and finish this race.  Full Course Yellow.  We also saw the #26 G-Drive car off the road.  Toyota #7 is off the road.  Toyota #8 has a penalty at their next pit stop.  The front brakes lock up and the rear wheels are still moving.  What could have caused that?  He was downshifting the gearbox as well and maybe losing aerodynamics under an LMP2 car.  Back time to the end of this race and we have less than two hours to go.  Two and a half stints for Alpine, and two stints and three laps for Toyota, on a short fill.

Matthieu Vaxiviere leads the motor race now.  The adrenaline high is natural, but stay focused.  The engineering staff's heart rates go up and no doubt, so does the driver's.  Kobayashi is going to have to pit and so the United Autosport car will move to third, the LMP2 leader.  Porsche #91 pits.  The battle for the final podium place will be between Fabio Scherer, the Swiss driver, and Kamui Kobayashi.  Scherer must pit to avoid square tires as we have Franco Colapinto and Anthony Davidson pitting in LMP2.  Porsche and Ferrari still lead GTE Pro.  Porsche GT Team and the two AF Corse Ferrari's.

Kobayashi had two wheels on the curb when he ran off the road and into the gravel.  30 seconds before we go back to green.  10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.  Full Course Yellow removed.  Green, green, green.  We have had two Full Course Yellow's in short order due to the #7 Toyota, after not having a yellow for four hours.  Toyota clearly has braking issues with the new Hypercar.  Fabio Scherer, the Swiss driver, is chasing Kamui Kobayashi.  He needs to stay out for a couple more laps to equalize the stints.  A great battle in LMP2 as Franco Colapinto is being monstered by 2014 LMP2 world champ, Anthony Davidson.

Matthieu Vaxiviere is being told that the G-Drive car is losing oil.  Toyota are trying to fight their way back onto the lead lap and there could be handling issues for the Alpine.  Vaxiviere vs. Kobayashi.  Vaxiviere is being told he is not fighting the Toyota, but he has to clean up his tires and get the clag off of them.  Kobayashi is a lap down.  The gap to second is 22 seconds to the sister #8 Toyota GR010 Hypercar.  Andre Negrao says it is going to be very close at the end of the race if Alpine is going to win.  Kazuki Nakajima is not being caught by the Alpine.  Fabio Scherer runs a 2:10 in LMP2, but a 2:06.8 for Tom Blomqvist for Jota Sport, on a new set of boots.  New tires for the Jota entry.

Job van Uitert leads Renger van der Zande.  G-Drive just hasn't had a straight up race today.  Kevin Estre is being told to save everything, 20 seconds ahead of Alessandro Pier Guidi in the AF Corse Ferrari.  They've had three right rear tire punctures at Porsche in LM GTE Pro.  Porsche and Ferrari will continue in GTE Pro next year in 2022.  More teams will come to Hypercar in 2022 and 2023 as well.  This shows well so far, as a transitional year for the FIA WEC.  Franco Colapinto is only 17 years old.  So he is definitely a star of the future.

Antonio Garcia, "the King of Spain" is running well in the Chevrolet Corvette C8.R right now.  Balance of Performance is a complex system, but it is variety, like fruit.  Apples, oranges, bananas, pears, grapes, for instance.  The Le Mans Hypercars will be getting bigger, with manufacturers producing cars and people racing them, just like Group C back in the 1980s with Porsche, Lancia, Mercedes, Toyota, Nissan, and others.  

A drive through penalty will be issued to the #7 Toyota and Kamui Kobayashi, after Jose Maria Lopez hit the Porsche earlier in the motor race.  It is going to come down to Matthieu Vaxiviere in the Alpine and the sister Toyota of Kazuki Nakajima.  There is a drive through penalty also for the #20 High Class Racing car after making contact with the #25 G-Drive car.  It will perhaps be difficult for the #7 Toyota to make the podium, even though there's an hour and a half to go in the race.  Katherine Legge has been warned for track limits.  Four laps to go for Matthieu Vaxiviere in his stint.  Give it everything you have, sunshine.  Nakajima and Kobayashi could still be in this.  But Vaxiviere is being told to push, as Andre Negrao is going to get into the Alpine.

Singatech is taking the fight to a big automaker like Toyota.  Signatech build all of the single make Alpine Cup and Alpine GT4 cars, the sporting brand for Renault, is Alpine of course.  Toyota #7 is serving the drive through penalty.  United Autosports, car #22, takes third and so we have an LMP2 car on the overall podium with Phil Hanson, Fabio Scherer, and Filipe Albuquerque.  Pit stop time for Racing Team Nederland as well.  Equal stint lengths for both Toyota's and the Alpine to the end of the race.  Job van Uitert is in the Jumbo sponsored car.  #29 leads LMP2 in the Pro Am challenge.  Tatiana Calderon I believe is now in the #1 Richard Mille Racing LMP2 car.  

Felipe Fraga is now second in Aston Martin #33 chasing Alessio Rovera in the #83 AF Corse Ferrari.  Filipe Albuquerque as well, he is going to replace Fabio Scherer for the final stint at United Autosport in LMP2.  Franco Colapinto is still losing oil and wriggling through the Bus Stop.  Meantime, we will see Matthieu Vaxiviere pit now.  Watch the pit entry wall.  Fuel, tires, and a driver change.  Andre Negrao will finish the Alpine in this motor race after starting it, as Kazuki Nakajima goes to the lead, but he too has a pit stop in his future.

New boots and fuel for the Alpine.  WRT's clutch issue was a release bearing.  They are refitting the air box and the floor and they will get back into the race.  That's good.  You only learn by racing, not by having to constantly fix the car.  Franco Colapinto is losing time to Filipe Albuquerque.  Tatiana Calderon for Richard Mille Racing says that her stint wwas a tough one.  She says the team is learning and they want to go for the top ten.  Calderon is driving in the FIA WEC for the first time.  Calderon wants to inspire the next generation of women racing drivers.

Michelle Mouton also raced at Le Mans in 1975, and she is an ambassador for women in motorsports and she of course was a member of the famous Group B Audi team in the 1980s.  Franco Colapinto is now in the garage and of course, he was losing oil from the car.  Kamui Kobayashi has pitted the Toyota for regular service.  Jota takes over a couple places in LMP2 as Toyota #7 and Kobayashi are back on track.  Rui Andrade wanted to stick his nose in someplace where it couldn't go.  The LMP2 cars have been reeled in compared to the new Hypercars, and of course the new generation LMP2 cars were introduced in 2017.  They are 20 kilograms heavier, 65 horsepower down, and they have less downforce and a lot of drag.

All LMP2 cars have been altered in the way I just explained.  It could be game over for the #26 G-Drive car.  We shall see.  Kamui Kobayashi has set fastest sector time of anyone in sector one during the whole race.  Mild weather here at Spa.  The issue with G-Drive Racing, is that they have a couple issues.  But, they are not a full season entry in FIA WEC.  They have a race for European Le Mans Series in two weeks at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.  Filipe Albuquerque runs a 2:06.978 while the Toyota goes 2:06.934, the #8 Toyota.  Franco Colapinto says the team worked very well, but they've run into irreparable issues, so they are out of the race now.  But, they will be back at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and again, in the European Le Mans Series.

We continue to watch LMP2 and the Pro Am subcategory especially for Racing Team Nederland and PR1/Mathiasen.  Ah.  WRT is about to come back into the race, while we are seeing multiple drive through penalties for at least half a dozen cars, including the #22 United Autosport LMP2 car for violating something under Full Course Yellow procedure.  Cars #98, #47, #20, #52, #60, #22, for Full Course Yellow violations.  This is for the first FCY we saw in the race earlier on.  #24 is in the garage and the WRT car is back on track with Charles Milesi driving.  There will be ten penalties out of 32 remaining cars on track.

#22 is taking their medicine and have gotten the penalty out of the way.  Four more cars, #38, #29, #70, and #52, have also been penalized a second time.  #38 is taking their medicine now as well.  #28 and #29 pass #38 while #29 has served a penalty.  RealTeam are in the lane as well, Loic Duval in the #70.  Tom Blomqvist is being told to box this lap.  You are second, but hit the lane.  #98 Paul Dalla Lana, in the Aston Martin, is penalized, with Marcos Gomes driving.  The #47 Cetilar Ferrari, with Antonio Fuoco at the controls, pits to serve a penalty as well, and so does the #52 Miguel Molina Ferrari, which will now put the #63 Chevrolet Corvette C8.R on the podium for Oliver Gavin and Antonio Garcia.  Now, that is a big maybe.  It has not happened yet.

Gianmaria Bruni has been passed by the #83 AF Corse Ferrari in GTE Am passes.  Pit stop time for the Corvette, for the final time.  Antonio Garcia will finish.  Garcia raced the Spa 24 Hours in the GT1 days and he also raced in the World Touring Car Championship for BMW as Kevin Estre leads GTE Pro over Alessandro Pier Guidi by 20+ seconds.  Kazuki Nakajima will be into pit lane in a couple more laps.  He may need a splash and a dash at the very end.  Colapinto has a broken oil line on the G-Drive car.  Game over.  

6 Hours of Spa: Hour 4

Jose Maria Lopez continuing to hound Nico Lapierre here for the lead of the motor race, look.  Pit stop time for Racing Team Nederland in LMP2.  #22 reported to the stewards for an unsafe release and United Autosport have not changed the driver indicator.  Now it has.  Fabio Scherer is in the car.  Remember, Fabio, to plug in your radio.  WRT is in the lane with trouble.  They were not ready for the pit stop and the car is on the dollies headed back to the garage.  They have a problem in the footwell of the car on the right hand side.  Something going on with the brake pedal perhaps.  The Toyota has dropped 2.2 seconds behind the Alpine.  James Calado pits from the GTE Pro lead in the Ferrari.  85 laps complete at halfway, 367 miles.  

There is a brake master cylinder issue for the #31 WRT LMP2 entry.  They are actually bleeding fluid for the clutch.  So, there's some kind of clutch issue, but this car is not using a normal manual transmission, but it must be gear selection woes.  Tom Blomqvist has taken over the #28 Jota Sport car and the sister car of Antonio Felix Da Costa is about to pit as well.  Box, box, box, into the lane for a driver change at Alpine.  Nicolas Lapierre has run very well and he will pit from the lead.  They are on a totally different strategy than are Toyota.  Toyota gets 3-4 laps more in fuel mileage.  Charles Milesi is the next driver in the car at WRT.  Vincent Vosse, team boss, says it was a clutch issue for that automobile at WRT.  #36 in the lane for service.

Matthieu Vaxiviere is now driving the #36 Alpine hypercar.  Tires and fuel into the car.  Vaxiviere is very quick and good in traffic.  For WRT, he started the car in gear on the starter motor.  The small batteries in these cars are not meant to be like a production car battery at all.  Speaking of WRT, Ferdinand Habsburg says he felt something in the clutch, came in for a pit stop, and the clutch stalled the car.  The clutch woes are getting worse according to him.  He says he enjoyed his most recent stint, but got unlucky.  He says it is very hard for LMP2 cars to overtake on the straightaways despite being quick in the turns.

Ferdinand Habsburg is the scion of the Austrian Habsburg dynasty.  Simon Trummer in the PR1/Mathiasen car gets into a dust up with a GTE car.  Franco Colapinto is flying in the #26 G-Drive car, 2:05.917 for the 17-year-old Argentinian.  Racing Team Nederland is passed by Jota Sport.  Tom Blomqvist going around Frits van Eerd who has just gotten into the yellow car for his second stint while Matthieu Vaxiviere uncorks another very quick lap.  

Toyota continue to run 1-2 in Hypercar ahead of Alpine.  United Autosports leads G-Drive and Jota.  That is in LMP2.  Porsche leads Ferrari and Corvette in GTE Pro while in GTE Am, yours truly has to check.  Brendon Hartley has the #8 Toyota in second spot.  Jose Maria Lopez still has the sister #7 Toyota.  The #36 Alpine will need an extra pit stop.  Matthieu Vaxiviere is consistently quicker than the Toyota's right now I believe.  Nicolas Lapierre says that his stint went well and he had to push a lot for the lead of the race, so did his co-drivers.  Now, the strategy is different as the stints are longer, trying to open the gap.

Will the race stay green?  It is a learning process for Signatech with the new Alpine Hypercar.  This is very close, and now we see United Autosport moving by Racing Team Nederalnd.  Fabio Scherer vs. Frits van Eeera and a tag and a squeeze between the #7 Toyota of Jose Maria Lopez and the #92 Porsche 911 RSR-19, misjudging the braking capability of the GTE Pro cars.  The left front dive plane is off the #7 car but the Toyota's don't seem to be running dive planes anyhow.  The left front light cover off the #7 Toyota.  It flew off the car.  If the light goes out, Toyota will be forced by the marshals to change the nose.  Toyota #7 will be off sequence if pit work is needed.

Jaxon Evans is scrapping for sixth in class in GTE Am with Andrew Watson.  Porsche vs. aston Martin.  In the tag with the Porsche of Richard Lietz, car #91, that was how the light cover fell off the Toyota.  Another scrap here, look, between Dempsey Proton and D'station.  Pit stop time for the #70 RealTeam LMP2 car as Neel Jani now leads LM GTE Pro in Porsche #92.  RealTeam are in the lane as the only car in the pit lane right now.  Matthieu Vaxiviere has put in the fastest lap of the race so far, and his stint average is faster than both Toyota's for Jose Maria Lopez and Brendon Hartley.  

A good battle in LMP2 as the leader makes the move.  Lapierre loses a second and a half on Toyota.  Tatiana Calderon is defending from Ben Hanley.  Hanley is going to try somewhere, but it was not safe, diving down through Pouhon and Ben Hanley half spins!  He just lost the front end of the car, down through Pouhon and Fangnes I believe.  Contact between Porsche #91 and Toyota #7 could be a turning point in this motor race with less than two and a half hours to go as Matty Vaxiviere is back in the lead.  Toyota has a new nose and a new tail prepared, set up exactly the same as the primary one on the car.

Porsche #91 has a right rear flat tire!  The right rear tire on the Porsche's lasted 18-20 laps.  He did of course get tagged by the Toyota.  98 laps, 423 miles.  The damaged right rear tire is being examined at Porsche .  Was the damage from the tire or from the Toyota?  The car is being garaged to get fixed.  Toyota #7 is also in the lane from the lead.  The rear bodywork will be changed on the Porsche and the Toyota will do a nose change after it is fueled.  Matthieu Vaxiviere now moves to second place.  No nose change for Toyota!  Wow!  They don't see aero loss from the busted headlight and they don't want to lose time.  That's damage assessment.  The light still works.

Toyota #8 will pit next lap and so the Alpine will be back into the lead.  The debris is at the 17th turn, at Blanchimont.  Andrew Watson at Aston Martin is chasing Porsche factory ace Jaxon Evans.  He was a Porsche Junior last year, but is not a factory driver this year.  Larry ten Voorde who has run in FIA WEC before was champion in Porsche Supercup last year as the #8 Toyota is in the lane as Kamui Kobayashi is in the #7 and Kazuki Nakajima, thus, takes over #8.  The debris at Blanchimont causes a Full Course Yellow.  10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.  Full Course Yellow.  Full Course Yellow.

The #25 G-Drive LMP2 car is in he lane and back on track again.  This Full Course Yellow is for housekeeping, cleaning debris off the track service.  A cold track will make these tires cold.  No question.  The Alpine has been in and out and there's lots of pit activity in LMP2 as well as Jan Magnussen has taken over the #20 High Class car.  GTE Pro cars also in the lane.  This is a short stint for Alpine and they are back in line with Toyota as they are pitting while Kamui Kobayashi takes over the lead of the motor race.  Kamui Kobayashi now leads, and he has just cleared sector one.

Full Course Yellow removed soon.  10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.  Full Course Yellow removed.  We are green.  #7, #36, #8, they will clear sector two, as #36 needs to clear a couple GTE cars.  Kobayashi leads while Vaxiviere is 14 or so second in-arrears.  102 laps completed, 440 miles, as WRT in LMP2 could be done for the day after their clutch woes.  Kobayashi, Vaxiviere, Nakajima, 1-2-3.  Anthony Davidson chasing Franco Colapinto in LMP2 for second in class.  Five seconds added to the next pit stops for Toyota #8 and United Autosports #22 for blocking and unsafe release.  Kazuki Nakajima and Fabio Scherer.  There is an investigation for the clatter between Richard Lietz and Jose Maria Lopez as well.

The top three are covered by 37 seconds or so.  Rahel Frey in the #80 Iron Dames/Iron Lynx Ferrari, they've dropped down after pit stops.  They could be out of sync with pit stops.  Tatiana Calderon in the other all female car in the race, is 13th overall, tenth in LMP2.  Manuela Gostner is still in the Iron Lynx/Iron Dames Ferrari, as Katherine Legge will get back into the car, after a horrid crash she had last year at Paul Ricard in the south of France.  Kamui Kobayashi is eking out a gap on Matthieu Vaxiviere.  Toyota, if they win this, they'll have earned it.  Not like in years past where they've had it all their own way.

#22 did have an unsafe release from the pit lane, adding five seconds to their next pit stop, judging where 80 kilometers an hour (50 miles an hour) is.  The #83 AF Corse Ferrari still leads in LM GTE Am.  Kamui Kobayashi running in the 2:05 range, moving ahead of Matthieu Vaxiviere.  Yikes!  Some agricultural racing for the #22 United Autosports car.  Something may have fallen off that car for Fabio Scherer.  He was team mates with Ferdinand Habsburg, last year, at WRT in DTM.  The GTE Pro and GTE Am battles are close.  Alessio Rovera is really going for it in GTE Am right now.  A cracking drive for him in the #83 AF Corse Ferrari.  

Oliver Gavin has probably come out of a race car for the last time in his career.  Antonio Garcia will be back into the car.  Thank you so much, Oliver Gavin, for the great action, the great racing, over the past two decades.   


6 Hours of Spa: Hour 3

One of the G-Drive cars has gone off the road.  Which one is that?  Nyck de Vries has binned the #26!  Or, he did some rallycross racing at the very least.  Mike Conway says that Toyota called their swap of the two cars to see what their pace was like.  They are working on tire management.  Working on tire management but pushing the car and the tires to the very limit.  Conway says "Alpine is keeping us honest the whole way."  Conway says learning and getting mileage is what this exercise is all about.  But they are fighting for the lead of the motor race.  Jose Maria Lopez is second, 24 seconds down on Nico Lapierre in the race leading Alpine right now.  The whole driving style on these cars, has changed, as Lopez runs wide locking the brakes.

Racing is so different from testing.  Incident under investigation between #26 and #777.  G-Drive and D'station.  Don't hit anything and stay out of the pits.  Those are the cardinal rules in endurance racing.  But the #26 has hit a lot of things today.  The #8 Toyota did serve a 30 second hold for minimum refueling time violations.  This is a new regulation that they had to get their heads around at Toyota Gazoo Racing, while Nico Lapierre is still the leader of this motor race as Oliver Gavin is moving around the #77 Dempsey Proton Porsche and the #98 AMR Aston Martin.  Paul Dalla Lana and Christian Ried, both of them, are team owners.  Gerold Ried, Christian's father, is here at the race, and Christian Ried's son is also here and wanting to drive.

Christian Ried's son might get into open wheeled cars, in Formula 4.  Francesco Castellaci will pit soon and Dylan Pereira is now at the wheel of the #33 Aston Martin.  That's the TF Sport car.  Black and white flag for contact as Nyck de Vries made contact with the #777 D'station Aston Martin.  Paul Dalla Lana is back in the #98 car and Thomas Flohr is now driving the #54 AF Corse car.  Same drivers and same livery year on year, and the same car as well.  Toyota has a new car, but with the same drivers and the same livery.  Their hybrid system is new, and is akin to a road car, and the aerodynamics are totally different.  The Hypercar is not the same as the LMP1 machines of yesteryear.

A good number of LMP2 cars are still on the lead lap as we are ten minutes into the third hour.  The Jota cars have been running well and the #22 United Autosport car is in the lane with Filipe Albuquerque at the controls.  Fabio Scherer is the third driver.  Ferdinand Habsburg, the Austrian Prince, is now leading for Team WRT in LMP2.  Team WRT are moving in and shadowing the United Autosport car.  Habsburg did the full Asian Le Mans Series and he has been racing in the European Le Mans Series as well.  WRT has had a lot of work to do, but they are allowing a natural buildup in speed for the car.

Ben Keating says that his spin was crazy.  He says "I feel lucky I was able to gather myself up to keep the lead.  I should know Juan Pablo Montoya racing in IMSA."  Pit stop time for the DragonSpeed car, speaking of Montoya.  Keating says the Aston Martin is a spare car, a backup car, and he knew how close he was to the wall.  "As I am sliding back, I am downshifting to first gear, and trying to find the starter and get going."  Keating was racing earlier as well Matt Campbell and he also knows how fast Alessio Rovera is.  

Ferdinand Habsburg dives for the lane, very late.  Nico Lapierre continues to lead the race.  High Class Racing are moving in in LMP2.  Nicolas Lapierre continues to lead as we have the pit lane stacked with LMP2's.  Sean Gelael, Nyck de Vries, Ferdinand Habsuburg, Dennis Andersen, Jakub Smiechowski, and more.  So, Filipe Albuquerque cycles back to the top of the tree.  Contact between the two Am class Ferrari's for Cetilar and Iron Lynx.  Rahel Frey in the #85 Iron Dames entry was rotated.  The #24 PR1/Mathiasen car is in the pit lane.  Gabriel Aubry into the car.  Brendon Hartley is third in Hyupercar.  Brendon Hartley is upset.  Antonio Felix Da Costa tried to leave room but slammed the door in Hartley's face.

"Who is driving that car?!" Hartley yells on the radio.  That was scary!  Three hours and 40 minutes still remaining on the board.  Hartley tried to put in the move while Antonio Felix Da Costa was trapped behind a Ferrari.  Nicolas Lapierre is in the lane from the race lead.  Matthieu Vaxiviere, another superstar driver in endurance and in open wheel racing is the Frenchman.  The Alpine is back on track.  The finish will be wild in the next few hours as this race continues.  We watch the #20 High Class Racing car, with Dennis Andersen at the controls.  Andersen gets loose between the two G-Drive cars and almost spins out!

He was rallycrossing that car.  Calm down.  Forget it.  Focus forward.  High Class Racing will have Anders Fjordbach with Kevin and Jan Magnussen, a father and son team, driving their second car, at the 24 Hours of Le Mans coming up in August.  Now, Neel Jani leads for Porsche in GTE Pro.  We are used to seeing him in an LMP1 Porsche of course.  Daniel Serra and Oliver Gavin are a couple notable names in GTE Pro as we watch another scrap, and you guessed it, it's DragonSpeed vs. G-Drive.  Marco Seefried runs ahead of Thomas Flohr.  Giorgio Sernagiotto is now in the #47 Cetilar Ferrari.  Rahel Frey has moved past Thomas Flohr and so does Sernagiotto.  

Rahel Frey will now try to catch Marco Seefried.  No further action on the incident between #47 and #60.  Jose Maria Lopez leads Le Mans Hypercar while United Autosport leads LMP2 with Filipe Albuquerque at the controls.  After two and a half hours, the LMP2 leader has fallen off the lead lap.  Filipe Albuquerque leads Nyck de Vries by over a minute while Sean Gelael is third.  Ferdinand Habsburg next for WRT and then comes Antonio Felix Da Costa for Jota Sport and Frits van Eerd in the Jumbo Supermarkets Racing Team Nederland car.

The Toyota GR010 had not turned a wheel until last Monday with the prologue.  It's hard for car makers to get a hold of semiconductors right now.  Everyone is buying electronics while we've had lockdown for the virus for a year.  That's why.  Dylan Pereira, Rahel Frey, and Marco Seefried, are leading in LM GTE Am.  Nico Lapierre and Alpine are looking down the barrel of the possibility of a real result.  This was indeed a last minute effort for the Hypercar class, but this is attracting the attention of Alpine and Renault to build a new car in the future.  Renault of course, won Le Mans way back in 1978.  Renault, Alpine, and Nissan, are all in the same place.  Luca DiMeo is the new head of the Renault/Nissan group.  

A battle here between Rahel Frey for Iron Lynx closing up on the #88 Dempsey Proton Porsche 911 RSR-19 for Marco Seefried.  Manuela Gostner and Katherine Legge are the other drivers in that Ferrari.  The #80 car.  Rui Andrade will be the next driver into the #25 car.  The Angolan driver is ready to race.  Rahel Frey is closing up on Marco Seefried and then Satoshi Hoshino.  He is running out of tire grip.  He is in his second stint.  Ferdinand Habsburg is chasing Sean Gelael in LMP2.  Habsburg's last lap, 2:09.77.  Brendon Hartley's last lap, a 2:10.6.  The Hypercar and the LMP2 car are not world's apart.  Rahel Frey has moved past Marco Seefried.  Paul Dalla Lana will be the next car in the Aston Martin, on her shopping list.

Sean Gelael is being reeled in for position by Ferdinand Habsburg.  Antonio Felix Da Costa is next up in the sister Jota car.  Anthony Davidson is suited and booted, ready to take over the #38 car.  It's sunny here in Spa, but in the shade, it's freezing cold.  Sean Gelael is dealing with a twitchy rear end through the chicane.  The left rear tire is taking a pasting around this place.  Habsburg has a run, but he does not have the momentum yet.  The Toyota pace is strong compared to Nico Lapierre in the Alpine.  Lapierre slides his way off the road as he tries to get in front of a Porsche.  Gelael is fending off Habsburg and Habsburg decides discretion is the better part of valor.

Jose Maria Lopez leads the motor race and is in the lane for service.  We saw a very slow pit stop for this car, checking the tail section for rubber pickup, and no pressurized oil added to the automobile.  Jose Maria Lopez is back on track behind Nicolas Lapierre.  Brendon Hartley leads the motor race and he will head for pit lane shortly.  Toyota #7, Jose Maria Lopez off the road on his out lap.  Brendon Hartley in the sister car now in the lane as well.  Toyota in testing, must have had loads of trouble with tire pick up.  There's probably vibrations the drivers are feeling, especially at the Bus Stop.  Toyota down and away and back in the race as Norman Nato is now at the wheel of the Real Time Racing LMP2 car.

Jota under prssure from WRT as Ferdinand Habsburg moves around Sean Gelael.  Gelael defends well.  Antonio Felix Da Costa in the second Jota Sport car is pushing but Giedo van der Garde is steaming along right behind him.  Porsche #91 in the lane, with Richard Lietz at the controls, fourth in LM GTE Pro.  The Porsche's have had tires that have been dropping pressure.  Their third stint is dandy however.  Neel Jani is running his first GTE race.  He is adapting to the production car.  Lap times in GTE Pro are in the 2:15 bracket.  Yikes!  Paul Dalla Lana needs to give the spot back to the Porsche and so is the Cetilar Ferrari.  Brendon Hartley is in a rush to get through this.  Marco Seefried and Giorgio Sernagiotto have passed Paul Dalla Lana in LM GTE Am.

The most recent pit stop for the #8 Toyota has been deemed an unsafe release by the stewards.  Brendon Hartley wouldn't have known, trusting the lollipop man who is supposed to release the car at the end of the pit stop.  The #28 Jota Sport car is going to head for the pit lane?  Ah.  One more lap for Sean Gelael, sharing with Tom Blomqvist and Stoffel Vandoorne.  Nico Lapierre continues to lead over Jose Maria Lopez and Brendon Hartley.

Mistakes in the pit lane have dropped Toyota #8, 30 seconds behind the sister car, as Antonio Fleix Da Costa has caught Ferdinand Habsburg.  Habsburg slams the door in Da Costa's face.  Giedo van der Garde and Sean Gelael, smell blood in the water.  They want in on this.  Ferdinand Habsburg wriggles his way through the Bus Stop, passing the Iron Lynx #80 Ferrari with Matteo Cressoni driving.  Sophia Florsch in the #1 Richard Mille Racing Oreca is also going to be passed by Habsburg in his attempt to get out of the clutches of Sean Gelael.  Don't leave the door open too wide.

Vincent Voose, team boss at WRT, has led the team to many GT glories and they've also raced World Touring Car Championship, DTM, and now LMP2.  Antonio Felix Da Costa tries to go past Ferdinand Habsburg, some argy bargy between those two, and Giedo van der Garde can go for it.  Side by side between Gelael and Da Costa.  Sophia Floresch is there.  Use the GT cars as a pick.  Wow!  This is some massively brave racing!  Habsburg got chopped by the GT machines.  Habsburg was on the dirty side of the road.

Filipe Albuquerque leads Nyck de Vries while Antonio Felix Da Costa is third followed by Giedo van der Garde I believe.  We have had no yellows and no safety cars yet.  But, you never can tell.  Neel Jani pits from the GTE Pro lead.  Pit stop time for Porsche and Neel Jani in the #92 Porsche for left side tires only.  Nico Lapierre leads as Jose Maria Lopez is closing in, but the gap is four seconds.  Lopez is closing on Lapierre.  I was right.  Big brake lockup for Toyota #7!  Yikes!  It's getting colder outdoors.  So, the braking performance and the tire performance are fading, which makes the brakes easier to lock up.

Alpine now leads by barely three seconds.  Lopez is not losing ground.  Paul Dalla Lana is mightily struggling with abusing track limits and he has had two drive through penalties already.  Jeepers creepers!  Filipe Albuquerque in the lane for United Autosports.  Fabio Scherer, their new driver, a Silver rated driver from Switzerland is into the car, making his first start with the team in the FIA WEC.  The temperature, ambient, has dropped four degrees from 14 degrees Celsius to ten degrees Celsius as the skies have clouded up compared to earlier on.  Franco Colapinto, the Argentinian driver takes over the #26 G-Drive car, and a close call between Fabio Scherer and Henrik Hedman coming out of the pit lane.

Ferdinand Habsburg is catching back up to Antonio Felix Da Costa and others.  Nyck de Vries is the momentary leader in LMP2.  Ben Hanley has taken the DtagonSpeed car over from Henrik Hedman.  The gap is under two seconds halfway through the motor race in Le Mans Hypercar.  Three hours done.  Three to go.     

6 Hours of Spa: Hour 2

 Porsche #91 got around the Ferrari's, and the Ferrari's pitted but did not do a driver change.  Car #21 will have a ten second stop and go penalty for causing a collision.  That is Juan Pablo Montoya in the DragonSpeed car.  Montoya is back behind Keating.  Juan, don't touch the blue Aston, whatever you do!  Porsche #92 in the lane.  Left side tires for the car.  Anything you can do, I can do better.  The left side tires get a huge pasting through turns like Pouhon and Stavelot as well as into the Bus Stop.  What a fundamnentally different motor race we've seen thus far.  Yikes.  The Hypercars are actually sttuggling to get by the GTE cars as the #63 Chevrolet Corvette C8.R has leapfrogged the Porsche's, that's the Antonio Garcia, Oliver Gavin car.  Bruni moves past Garcia.  In the middle sector, the Hypercars are in the way of the GT cars.  The Hypercars don't have the corner speed compared to the GT's, but the Hypercars are supposed to be road cars.  They are supposed to be a whole lot like a street going, street relevant sports car.

Phil Hanson leads LMP2 but has Giedo van der Garde and Robin Frijns just behind.  Frijns moves by Roman Rusinov.  Rusinov and Vandoorne, both of those blokes were shot ducks.  Stoffel Vandoorne has now moved into fourth past Rusinov.  Mike Conway is reeling in Sebastien Buemi right now, following in his wheel tracks.  So, it is back to our regularly scheduled program here on the Sarcasm Channel.  Well, maybe.  Dempsey Proton leads LM GTE Am ahead of D'station.  Alessio Rovera has taken over the #83 AF Corse Ferrari.  Andrew Haryanto and Roberto Lacorte are next ahead of Marcos Gomes, the Brazilian driver who has taken over from Paul Dalla Lana, the Canadian veteran.  

Kevin Estre continues in the #92 Porsche he is sharing with Neel Jani.  Ferdinand Habsburg is about to take over from Robin Frijns at WRT in LMP2.  This new Toyota GR010 is a new car indeed.  It is very different from the previous generation cars like the TS050.  They will be in for a penalty, however, for short fueling.  A gorgeous start to this race for the weather.  2019 we had snow.  2020 we had rain and buckets of it.  This year, bright sunshine.  G-Drive car #26 is being investigated for an unsafe pit release.  A battle in LMP2 between Beitske Visser and Patrick Kelly.  Loic Duval is in the TDS Racing automobile.

Phil Hanson still leads over Giedo van der Garde.  Andre Negrao, 2:06.6, Sebastien Buemi, 2:06.7, Mike Conway, 2:06.9.  So, the lap times in Hypercar are close.  Phil Hanson once again, still leads Giedo van der Garde.  These two teams were very impressive in LMP2 last year.  Giedo van der Garde scrapping with Loic Duval along the Kemmel straightaway.  Fresh tires and full tanks for Duval as we see Ben Keating passing Satoshi Hoshino, two TF Sport operated entries.  ARC Bratislava have accepted the inevitable.  Their leaking fuel cell is giving them trouble and they are out of the race.  So, we will see them back at the next race at the 8 Hours of Portimao in Portugal.  

Meanwhile, Conway is keeping a watching brief as Sebastien Buemi still leads this motor race.  Pit stop time for John Falb and they have damage on the driver's side of the car.  There is a driver change.  Is it Rui Andrade?  Or is it Roberto Merhi?  Has the car run out of water?  Aerodynamically, the car is not meant to have a hole in the bodywork.  Esteban Garcia has handed the #70 car to Loic Duval for RealTeam Racing.  A Swiss team with a Swiss driver.  The Garcia/Duval/Nato car is going to have to come back through the field.

The team were forced to come in due to a punctured tire.  Juan Pablo Montoya is scrapping again with G-Drive.  That's Roman Rusinov.  There's a vendetta building between these two.  Is that Roberto Merhi in #25?  Hard to tell.  It's Merhi, the Spaniard.  Juan Montoya wouldn't have known who on earth it was.  Some random racing driver.  Montoya also had Roberto Gonzalez in the #38 Jota Sport car as well.  Sebastien Buemi is coming up behind these two.  Buemi wants to get in there, and Merhi chops him, while Mike Conway is chasing.  No one said this was going to be easy.  Toyota team boss Pascal Vasselon has to be scratching his head here.

Andre Negrao remains third.  Mike Conway was told the Alpine is catching him, Andre Negrao at the wheel of it.  The Hypercar class is covered by a blanket.  Traffic is playing a much larger role than it used to be in this championship.  #21 in the lane now, Montoya.  Driver change at DragonSpeed.  Is it Henrik Hedman or Ben Hanley in the car now?  Not sure.  United Autosport in the lane in #22 and Filipe Albuquerque takes over from Phil Hanson.  WRT is in and so is Racing Team Nederland.  Will they put Frits van Eerd in the car.  Ferdinand Habsburg is now in the #31 WRT car.  Racing Team Nederland temporarily takes the LMP2 lead.

Giedo van der Garde has made up time and TDS have been faster on pit stops than United.  The endurance pit lane is downhill although I think the WEC cars are using the main pit lane here.  Frits van Eerd is the proprietor of Jumbo Supermarkets in Holland.  But he is also an extremely quick racing driver.  WRT were slower than United as well.  Racing Team Nederland have had the fastest pit stop.  Pit stop time as well for Richard Mille Racing.  Job van Uitert will be the next driver in the Racing Team Holland car.  Sophia Floresch is into the Ricard Mille car.  G-Drive, Jota, InterEuropol, and more, in the lane in LMP2.  

G-Drive are in the lane now with the #26 car and the #38 Jota Sport is in.  #28 has Sean Gelael in the car now.  He is responsible for the KFC, Taco Bell, and Coca Cola sponsorship on that car.  So, Yum Brands, and Coca Cola.  Andre Negrao remains third in the Alpine, stopping just shy of where the Toyota's stopped.  The gap has dropped from three to 1.8 seconds as Negrao is closing up on Mike Conway.  The Alpine is in the lane.  Everything is OK for Team WRT according to Robin Frijns as he drove to third spot in LMP2.  Filipe Albuquerque leads the class by nine seconds over Fritz van Eerd.  Nicolas Lapierre takes over the Alpine.  

There was another driver change somewhere.  Not sure who it was and in which car.  Alex Brundle has pitted for Intereuropol and Jakub Smiechowski is into that car as the #77 Dempsey Proton Porsche of Christian Ried who almost crashes his car.  Alessio Rovera is in the #83 AF Corse class leading automobile.  Mike Conway is told he has five laps left in his stint before a driver change.  Big lockup there, look, from Conway and the Toyota.  Yikes!  That's a fascinating incident.  The tires are knackered now for sure.  His aerodynamics maybe are going away just a wee bit and the energy recuperation on this car is totally different compared to the old LMP1 car.

Giedo van der Garde says that it is true the team is saving time on their pit stops at Racing Team Nederland and the car is getting better as the runs continue.  Frits van Eerd of course, is now into the automobile.  Andrew Haryanto, the Indonesian driver, battles with Francesco Castellaci in the #54 AF Corse Ferrari, scrapping for sixth in LM GTE Am.  Alessio Rovera leads the class over Christian Ried, Ben Keating, Satoshi Hoshino, and Marcos Gomes.  So, the Aston Martin's are still in the fight.  Fastest lap of the motor race for the #36 Alpine, the Elf, Matmut sponsored Hypercar racer.  Elf being French fuel, and Matmut, being a French insurance company.  Nicolas Lapierre will get into that car, on full tanks, and he will definitely push it, hard.

Gianmaria Bruni is in the lane for the #91 Porsche 911 RSR-19 and they are changing their strategy as the #25 car is being penalized for causing a collision with car #60.  That penalty was nearly an hour and 20 minutes ago.  You have to review the videotape, the data, and negotiate with the teams.  That's why the penalties take so long to be carried out.  Are you penalizing for carelessness and malice of forethought?  That's what you need to penalize for.  There was right rear tire trouble on the #91 Porsche.  Hard to tell if there was a puncture.  

The Toyota's seem to be slower than the Alpine.  With this performance delta, by dint of their pit stops, Alpine and Nico Lapierre, will take the lead of the motor race.  A battle ensues between Antonio Felix Da Costa, the reigning Formula E champion, and Jakub Smiechowski, the Polish driver.  Sebastien Buemi continues to be shadwoed by Mike Conway.  Jose Maria Lopez will take over Toyota #7 from Mike Conway.  So, we will see "Pechito" for the first time in the new race car.  There is a box of parts out and the team appears to be topping up oil on the car.  

Toyota was 25 seconds slower on the pit stop than the previous one.  Ooh.  Deary me.  That's not good.  Fundamentally, the Alpine Hypercar is the old Rebellion LMP1 from a couple season's in 2018-'19 and 2019-'20.  Toyota #8 in the lane and Brendon Hartley replaces Sebastien Buemi.  Driver change and checking tire and brake temps and cleaning the windscreen.  We're almost 1/3rd distance in this motor race.  Or 1/3rd duration.  Alpine are running shorter stints and will need an extra pit stop it appears.  Tires going on the #8 Toyota as Alpine are leading.  Fans will be singing the Marseillais, the French national anthem.    

Porsche in the lane and they have more tire trouble.  Driver change in car #92.  Neel Jani is into the car for the first time.  Jani spent such a long time racing front running prototypes, and now, he has to check his rearview mirrors.  The prototype blokes are freaking out by what the GT drivers do.  But at the same time, the GT drivers are trying to keep their cars on the road.  Porsche will be coming into Hypercar/LMDh in 2023.  Audi, Porsche, and Ferrari are coming, and so is Peugeot.  Peugeot will be in the game beginning next year.  There's plenty more to come.  Do you want to build a road car?  Do it.  Do you want a full prototype race car?  Go for it.  Do you want to use hybrid power?  Use it.  Would you rather use a combustion motor?  Use that.  It's going to be a mishmash of a lot of different ideas in this new era of sports car racing.

Phil Hanson says he and United Autosport need to find out why they are losing time in pit stops.  So, Oliver Gavin is now in the #63 Chevrolet Corvette C8.R as Antonio Garcia has finished his stint.  So, Oliver Gavin is starting his last race as a professional driver.  He has established his own driving school and has also begun commentating on races.  It would be great if we had fans here because Oliver Gavin is such a well known driver.  Nyck de Vries moves 'round Sean Gelael in LMP2.  Frits van Eerd gets passed by both Sean Gelael and Nyck de Vries, moving into the dirty section of the Fangnes corner.  Fangnes, Piff Paff, take your pick on the name.

The two Toyota's are turning it on and beginning to motor right now.  Car #26, Nyck de Vries will get a penalty for the pass on Sean Gelael.  A five second penalty added to their pit astop before they can work on it.  Christian Ried is being monstered, still, by Ben Keating, the LM GTE Am polesitter.  Alessio Rovera is leading GTE Am.  He ran well in Italian GT Endurance last year.  Alessio Rovera, an Italian, and Alessio Picariello, a Belgian driver, who will race for Absolute Racing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in August.  More pit stops are underway.  Frits van Eerd is leading in LMP2 Pro Am.  So, we will have to mention the Pro Am winners at the end of this race.

Marcos Gomes goes wide and gets back on track as we watch the #60 Iron Lynx Ferrari in the lane.  Drift it into the pit lane.  Time for a cup of tea in the broadcast booth it is.  Miguel Molina in the lane as well as a 1-2 is current for Ferrari and AF Corse.  Neel Jani runs third for Porsche in #92.  All three Hypercars have also led this motor race.  United Autosports has led LMP2.  Porsche and Ferrari have led GTE Pro and Porsche, Aston Martin, and Ferrari have led GTE Am.  

6 Hours of Spa: Hour 1

Borrowing some of the eloquent words of the late, great Brian Kreisky and his intros to some of the great races of the past, here at Spa, in the first iteration of the World Endurance Championship, the glory days, the thunder of Group C sports cars, from back in the 1980s, as we kick off a new season in 2021 for the FIA World Endurance Championship.

"You could say, the town of Spa in Belgium, is founded on water.  Deep in the Ardennes forest, south of Liege, it is the world's original health resort.  It owes it's existence to the abundance of natural springs in the area, and people have been coming to Spa, to take the water, since as early as the 16th century.  Nowadays, the town has a worldwide fame for an entirely different reason.  Up in the hills just south of Spa, lies a race track so scenic and so challenging to the driver's, it has become the spiritual home of European motor racing.

Spa Francorchamps.  Perhaps the most beautiful rendezvous of the FIA World Endurance Championship year.  Set in the magnificent pine forests of Belgium's Ardennes mountains, the track twists, climbs, and dives, around almost seven kilometers in a spectacle, essentially, of speed.  One of Europe's fastest circuits, Spa has a classic greatness about it, which both drivers and spectators, look forward to, each year.  It is a combination of long, hard straights, and neck wrenching downhill corners, as the new Le Mans Hypercars will subject their drivers to sheer speed, and we find out how the new cars from Toyota and Alpine, handle and perform, in their first race ever."

This is a completely new era, with new cars, and we saw in qualifying, that Toyota (who are three-time and defending champions in WEC) are ready and raring to mount another challenge.  Will Alpine, the French performance car manufacturer that gained fame in the 1960s, stand up to the test?  We await, still, the arrival of Glickenhaus, and their new Hypercar.  That machine is still undergoing much testing and fine tuning and could show up for the great 24 Hours of Le Mans in August.  That is their target, as they are continually refining the automobile to make it last for the duration of the 24 hour Grand Prix of Endurance.

But, that is in the future.  This is the present.  This is, the lid lifter of the 2021 FIA WEC season.  We are in the dawn of a new era on this May Day.  The competition will be majorly fierce today and throughout the season.  We have Martin Haven, Graeme Goodwin, and Allan McNish in the booth, as well as Louise Beckett and Duncan Vincent in the pit lane.  This is a short season, with half a dozen races, but half of those will pay extra points.  You can't drop the ball from day one.  Points scoring will be critical.  Such a gorgeous day here at Spa Francorchamps as we get ready to go.

If you are going to have a problem, this is the race to probably have that get in the way.  The penalty for a mistake here at Spa is massive.  We've lost both contenders from Project 1 and their Porsche team.  Game over for those boys.  Day one, and they don't even go to the grid.  They binned it on both sides of the garage.  Oh dear!  Mike Wainwright and GR Racing have also binned it, slamming the wall at Malmedy, at the Piff Paff.  Good grief!  Hopefully Mike Wainwright will get the car back to pit lane.  Jeepers creepers!  We also see the #77 Proton Competition Porsche 911 RSR-19.  Christian Ried had a massive wreck in qualifying yesterday at Eau Rouge, while the car was completely rebuilt.

So, a good deal for Christian Ried, (who has run all 66 FIA WEC races), alongside Matt Campbell and Jaxon Evans.  Porsche are on pole in GTE Pro with the #92 factory car, with Kevin Estre, the Frenchman starting the car.  In LMP2, Filipe Albuquerque is on the pole in the #22 United Autosport Oreca.  Ah.  There are tons of contenders to look at.  Toyota at the front of the grid as usual.  Toyota #7 starts on the pole for the new Hypercar era, the two Toyota's and the new Alpine.  Jose Maria Lopez says tire degradation will be big.  A heavier car is the new Toyota Hypercar, and also, they have a new tire for it.  

#7 ahead of #8.  The Alpine will also face a large challenge.  Oliver Gavin, also, after a decorated career, is racing his final event today before retiring.  He has been racing for more than 30 years.  Oliver Gavin will take the middle stint in the #63 Chevrolet Corvette C8.R with Antonio Garcia.  They had planned to race at Portimao in June as well, but they won't race there I don't think.  Fuel and a new driver, are into the car.  No formalities.  Just getting ready for the race.  Oh dear.  That #86 Porsche doesn't look good.  At least it came back on the flatbed truck.

Cold, slick tires, are made of wood and not rubber, or so it seems.  Tires have to have a happy medium.  Too hot or too cold are not good.  The pressures were not up to snuff.  They have to be able to repair the car in an hour before the race starts, otherwise, they are out.  The Belgian national anthem plays in the background as the teams prepare the cars.  Hypercar, is covering Le Mans Hypercar and will encompass LMDh which will debut in IMSA in a couple more years.  Phil Hanson, polesitter in LMP2, will start that car for the United Autosport team.  He and his team mates want the lead in class at the start of the motor race.

All the prototypes are together, and all of the GTE Pro cars, in the same pot.  So, they will have to exist alongside each other, the Hypercars, and the GTE Pro cars at the very least.  Where will the lower ranked drivers slot in?  That's a good question.  The quicker GTE cars have come to the fore.  Also, with the prototypes, stay with the long game, at the end of the year.  There will be battles in both Hypercar and LMP2.  In corners like Eau Rouge, Raidillon, Les Combes, that's where the Hypercars are really quick and the LMP2's are also quick in spots.  But the deal is with LMH, they have to be fault free.  What will the reliability be?  

My fan hat tells me this is going to be a mega motor race.  No margin for error in any of the classes to be totally honest.  Nice to see the Corvette C8.R, the #63, with Antonio Garcia, and Oliver Gavin, racing his final event today before he retires.  There's no better track than Spa to go for it.  Look out for Ben Keating as well in the vibrant, baby blue Aston Martin, car #33.  Keating, the American, sharing with Frenchman Dylan Pereira, and Brazilian Felipe Fraga.  GR Racing will fix their car.  Now, the teams are coming to the grid.  So, we are going to get ready to start, soon.

Be adaptable.  Motorsports have been able to survive the pandemic.  Ah.  No chance to fix the #86 Porsche.  They will be scratched from this race, and so will of course, Team Project 1.  Three brand new Porsche's, out of the race.  Just devastating.  Everyone is here because this is a passion.  It is not a job.  It is a passion.  We are on the final formation lap before the race begins.  Let's go.  It is time t get the new Hypercar era underway.  Miro Konopka in the ARC Bratislava LMP2 car is in pit lane.  That's the #44 Ligier JS P217.  Miroslav Konopka from Slovakia sharing with British drivers Tom Jackson and Darren Burke.

OK.  We are getting ready for a start.  Form up, side by side.  This it.  It's time to race, now.  Red lights, on.  Red lights, out.  Go!  Mike Conway leads and here comes Phil Hanson on one of the Toyota's, as Miguel Molina locks up the brakes and they dive into Eau Rouge for the first time of asking.  Robert Gonzalez is all over the road and the straight line speed of the Toyota's have made the LMP2 cars work harder, but they will be in the fight through the twisting corners.  Phil Hanson wants the speed.  Romain Rusinov has just moved ahead of Andre Negrao.  Negrao in the Alpine A480 Hypercar.  Sebastien Buemi is being monstered by Phil Hanson, down to the lowest point on the track.

Through Stavelot, into Blanchimont, and into the Bus Stop again.  The hybrid boost deployment is different and the new motor in the Toyota has less power, more on the same level as LMP2.  Oh dear.  A fuel leak for ARC Bratislava.  Not good.  Porsche leads Ferrari in LM GTE Pro.  The Alpine is not boosted by hybrid power.  Ben Keating in the Aston Martin has moved around Antonio Garcia.  Ben Keating is not a professional racing driver.  He is a car salesman in Texas in the United States.  The Porsche is finding breathing room over the Ferrari's.  But Phil Hanson is still glued to both of the new Toyota GR010 Hypercar's.  

This is the first time, with the Corvette, where Antonio Garcia and Oliver Gavin are driving together.  LMP2, those cars are fastest in sector two as we see Francois Perrodo racing Paul Dalla Lana.  Dalla Lana has a new livery on the Aston Martin, and has new co-drivers.  Francois Perrodo is moving up nicely as well.  The Ferrari's are far better in the race than in qualifying.  Matt Campbell is also moving up.  We also see another competitive run for one of the other Aston Martin's.  Tomonobu Fujii is one of the drivers.  Also, we have Cetilar Raing in a Ferrari.  Now then, the GTE Pro battle is heating up.  Ferrari's and one of the Porsche's.  

Car #20 runs wide in Les Combes, one of the LMP2 entries.  That's the Danish High Class Racing Oreca.  An all Danish lineup.  Meantime, DragonSpeed, G-Drive, and WRT, are battling in LMP2.  Juan Pablo Montoya vs. John Falb vs. Robin Frijns.  These first ten minutes have been hectic.  If the race settles down, we will talk more about driver lineups.  Now, Phil Hanson leads Giedo van der Garde in LMP2.  Andre Negrao taking the Alpine Hypercar around.  He has been a rapid LMP2 driver but now, he has this new Hypercar.  He has equalled the speed of the Toyota's on the previous lap.

The Hypercars are not as quick as the old LMP1 cars and the same will be true of the LMP2 racers.  Porsche have said, in a GT car, it is really hard for the prototypes to get by a quickly driven GTE car.  John Falb has raced at Spa a number of times.  Juan Pablo Montoya has not raced here since his Formula 1 days.  Montoya driving for DragonSpeed.  Antonio Garcia is closing up on Miguel Molina and Richard Lietz.  Garcia has been running as quickly as the Ferrari's, while Kevin Estre in the Porsche is quickest at 2:14 dead.  Four and a half sets of tires available for the race in GTE Pro.

Stoffel Vandoorne has also moved past John Falb with Romain Rusinov next up followed by Giedo van der Garde and Alex Brundle and wow, we can see the RealTeam LMP2 car of Esteban Garcia going off the road, a rookie driver.  Matt Campbell meanwhile, moves past Paul Dalla Lana and Tomonobu Fujii also, moves up in the TF Sport/D'station Aston Martin in GTE Am.  Oh dear.  A spin for the RealTeam Racing LMP2 car and he gets a tap through Brussels corner from the Ferrari.  Pro and Am drivers in GT take the same points.  

Andre Negrao has to change his engine mapping either to save fuel or to gain more power.  The Alpine has not yet been able to attack the LMP2 car on the straightaway.  This is an enigma for the Alpine team.  They can't carry as much fuel compared to what Balance of Performance says they can.  Christian Ried has his hands full with Tomonobu Fujii.  Get out of the way!  That is the Aussie, Matty Campbell actually.  Juan Pablo Montoya scrapping with Robin Frijns.  Turn up the boost little by little.  Step it up, just a taste.  With the Alpine, the fuel tank has some leftover fuel it just can't take.

Argy bargy, look, between the #777 Aston Martin and the #83 Ferrari.  Tomonobu Fujii vs. Francois Perrodo.  United Autosports run seven seconds ahead of Racing Team Nederland at this juncture.  Sebastien Buemi is being told to swap places with Mike Conway.  Buemi is second.  Conway is leading.  Buemi has not made a move yet.  We don't know.  It could be Buemi on the radio, yelling at his team, "he's holding me up!"  Mike Conway will have to have a massive lift or miss a shift or something.  

Toyota wants to go 1-2 in this race, you darn well better believe they do.  But, there's a long, long way to go.  We've got just over 20 minutes on the board.  They work past the second Dempsey Proton #88 Porsche with Andrew Haryanto from India at the controls.  Ah.  Buemi has moved past Conway.  This is on the downhill end of the circuit, towards Pouhon.  Buemi is faster than Conway and that's why the Toyota driver's have swapped places.  Battle for ninth now, G-Drive vs. Jota, and this is in LMP2.  There's also a scrap for third spot in GTE Pro. Antonio Garcia still chasing Richard Lietz and Miguel Molina.  John Falb battling Roberto Gonzalez.

Roberto Gonzalez is in his fourth season in FIA WEC.  Falb is being chased by lady racer Beitske Visser as well for the Richard Mille team.  Miguel Molina has Richard Lietz, look, right on his six.  Whoa!  Double contact in a sandwich there, look, between the Iron Lynx Ferrari and a couple LMP2 entries.  Sheesh!  That was the Iron Lynx car and the all female "Iron Dames" entry.  In GTE Am, Ben Keating is being monstered by Matt Campbell.  They stopped at diametric opposite ends of the grid.  Tomonobu Fujii is also right in this scrap as we have a local yellow on exit of La Source.

It was for debris.  Meanwhile, the plot thickens in GTE Pro.  Richard Lietz wants a good run but Miguel Molina has a tad more straight line speed.  The Porsche is stable in the middle, but the Ferrari has the speed and the Corvette continues to hang tough.  Now, the LMP2 cars have low drag aero, less power, and are heavier.  Be bold.  Be daring.  Juan Pablo Montoya is closing up on Roman Rusinov.  In a replay of the start, there was a squeeze play between the #24 PR1 car and the #70 RealTeam car in LMP2.  Sebastien Buemi and Mike Conway are right with each other.  How will traffic evolve in the next 20 laps?

The worst thing Toyota can do, is have their two cars fight each other, when they are just five seconds up the road from third spot.  Meanwhile, the GTE Am plot thickens as Ben Keating is still leading Matt Campbell.  Paul Dalla Lana in the #98 Aston Martin Vantage is being warned about track limits as well.  Ben Keating is delivering nd continues to do what he always does.  He has run very well on double duty with prototypes and GT cars in the Rolex 24 at Daytona for the last couple of years as well.  It's a darn shame, also, to not have Egidio Perfetti in the race today.  Tomonobu Fujii has run well in Super Taikyu, Super GT, Asian Le Mans Series, and now, FIA WEC.  We continue to watch the battle too, between John Falb and Beitske Visser in LMP2.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program and GTE Pro.  The scrum here, is between Ferrari and Porsche.  Ah.  Darn it.  We see it only briefly before coming back to GTE Am as Matt Campbell holds on by his fingernails over Ben Keating.  Campbell hangs tough on the outside and Keating was fortunately being gentlemanly.  No dodge 'em cars, thankfully.  Keating runs wide and swaps with Fujii, running deeply into Rivage.  Sebastien Buemi leads Mike Conway now by 1.4 seconds.  We could see LMP2 pit stops coming up.  Also, the #91 Porsche could be getting set for a driver change, as Richard Lietz will hand over to Gianmaria Bruni.

#91 could go for new tires and a driver change while the #92 can double stint their tires and keep Kevin Estre in the car for a double stint.  Loic Duval is back in the FIA WEC today in LMP2, for RealTeam Racing in that #70 car he is sharing with Norman Nato and Esteban Garcia.  Phil Hanson will pit for fuel only according his engineer Gary Robertshaw on the radio.  Whoops!  The Cetilar Ferrari has spun on the exit of the Bus Stop.  Roberto Lacorte gets shoved by Paul Dalla Lana.  Porsche #91 locks the brakes and slides up the escape road.  That's an official escape road instead of a runoff area.  

Robert Lacorte has spun again.  He likely has a punctured tire.  He's rotated that automobile and does not hit anything.  Pit stop time now for both United Autpsports and Racing Team Nederland.  No driver changes.  Pit stop time now too for DragonSpeed and for High Class Racing.  A quicker stop by Racing Team Nederland.  The TDS team has a quicker refueling stop than United Autosport.  TDS Racing are majorly good on pit stops.  Now, the #25 G-Drive car has damage on the car and there's steam emanating from the sidepod as well.  Not good.  That's the John Falb, Rui Andrade, Roberto Merhi car.  

There's a flood of LMP2 cars in the lane.  It's like a train station down there with comings and goings.  Stoffel Vandoorne, Roberto Gonzalez, and more.  So, United Autosports and Racing Team Nederland lead the class as Beitske Visser and Patick Kelly pit as well.  A black and white passing flag for Sebastien Buemi and also a warning and a penalty for Paul Dalla Lana, for ignoring the passing flags.  Alpine in the lane in Hypercar as Sebastien Buemi and Mike Conway lead the motor race, half a second apart.  The Alpine does not have the fuel consumption that the Toyota's do.

Tomonobu Fujii has won at Le Mans in an Aston Martin festival race and has run in NLS at the Nurburgring as well.  The sister #25 G-Drive car of John Falb had huge damage to the sidepod and he will have to re-enter the lane to continue fixing the damage.  Rusinov and Montoya battle for third in LMP2.  Romain Rusinov is a half a second ahead.  Stoffel Vandoorne is also in the battle in the #28 Jota Sport entry.  He is closing in on Rusinov and Montoya as they battle the Ben Keating Aston, and Ben Keting spins, and thank God he doesn't hit anything!  Keating was innocent as he spins through Pouhon.  Rusinov wants the racing line, but Montoya won't give it to him, and Keating is an innocent bystander.

Juan Pablo Montoya will have to stop in the sin bin at some point if the stewards say so.  Poor old Ben Keating was just trying to stay out of the way as Stoffel Vandoor is catching Roman Rusinov.  Vandoorne has to be careful of the front for grip and the rear tires.  No dice through Blanchimont and into the Bus Stop.  Alex Brundle and Robin Frijns battle for sixth in LMP2 as well.  Pit stop time for the leading Toyota of Mike Conway.  Sebastien Buemi stays out and Conway is in from second place.  Toyota are staggering the strategy here or so it appears.  

Andre Negrao is being told he can push on his tires with no degradation.  They are screaming around the track at 100%.  But, more power will allow Andre Negrao to get more out of the car.  For the rest of this stint, put a wee bit more energy into this.  Robin Frijns dives in on Alex Brundle and Frijns is sixth in LMP2, chasing down Stoffel Vandoorne.  Toyota #8 in the lane, Sebastien Buemi.  A crewman, checking the car, while it is being fueled up and he's down and away?  Nope.  Stop the car to check something before the release.  Now, Buemi is ahead of Conway!  Wowzers!  

Drive through penalty for Paul Dalla Lana.  He is having trouble keeping the car on the aggregate.  What's that all about?  Now, the fuel man was checking to see if he'd gotten all the fuel in the tank.  He is being told on the radio, "go, go, go!"  For a full stint stop, you need 35 seconds of fuel for the Hypercar and the GTE Pro cars as well.  Porsche #91 also pits.  Info t the pit lane from Edoardo Freitas, Race Director, as #98 is penalized for contact with the #47 Ferrari, the Cetilar Racing automobile.  Now, Goanmaria Bruni, I believe, is in the #91 factory Porsche.  Toyota did take the fuel probe out of the tank early.  That was weird.

The team is debriefing with team boss Pascal Vasselon, asking, "how do we not make this same mistake again?"  Was that an unsafe release?  The mechanic was out of the way with the fuel hose or so it seems.  But was he behind the line demarcating the pit box separating from the garage.  Porsche #91 of Gianmaria Bruni has just begun his stint.  Richard Lietz says that Porsche has the top speed, but it is harder to race behind a prototype.  You destroy the front tire and lose the downforce.  Porsche are still in the game.  They changed left side tires only according to their strategy.
