Having seen, and written about the California 8 Hours, and thinking it
was a good race... yes, it was probably a tad boring to some people
because there were no yellow flags, and the cars raced under green
conditions the whole time. The weather was better than it is in the
fall, when this race has been run on the Monterey peninsula the last few
years. What ought to happen, is this race (and I am agreeing with the
hosts of the Double Stint sports car racing podcast I listen to and link to this blog),
needs more promotion. Barely anyone in the Monterey Peninsula, living
there, knew it was happening. What the SRO should do, is promote the
race the same way they do, with a couple of their other marquee events,
and if the local law enforcement and population allows, drive the GT3
cars into the town center, so they can be seen by the fans, and fans can
get autographs from drivers, before the race.
Yours truly, agrees with John Dagys and Ryan Myrehn, the hosts of Double Stint. I hope, in the future, this race is promoted better on a local level, so fans can come out and see these wonderful GT3 race cars in action, competing on a global level, in their own backyard. It is a great event. It just needs to be far better promoted than it is at this point in time, and maybe finding a solid date for the race where the weather is going to be favorable, which spring seems to be, to me, would really help the California 8 Hours gain traction, so it can remain a part of the championship schedule for the Intercontinental GT Challenge.
