All you need to know on Friday from the Spa Francorchamps circuit as we get set for the biggest GT3 race of the year, tomorrow, the 24 Hours of Spa for both SRO GT World Challenge Europe and the Intercontiental GT Challenge powered by Pirelli.
Sports car racing, is my passion and I have been dedicated to it for well over two decades. A great quote from Steve McQueen in his 1971 movie, when he starred as Gulf Porsche driver Michael Delaney, comes to mind. "Racing is life. Anything that happens before or after, is just waiting." - Steve McQueen From the movie, "Le Mans" - 1971

EDITORIAL: A promotion? Yes. A promotion!
It is funny how you can have a great race as we did at Watkins Glen and be content with a decent finish. Then, when you least expect it, something happens to a competitor even after their race via force majeure that puts a spring in your step, extra whipped cream and a cherry on your sundae. Well, that is what has just happened to my friends at Action Express. We were content with third place after a great drive from our trio, and especially the massive stint put in mid-race by Jack Aitken, our endurance racing specialist who also steered us to our victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring earlier in the year. Then comes news that the "winning car", emphasis in quotation marks, fails post-race scrutineering and the stewards find something amiss in their camp.
That is exactly what has happened. The sword of Damocles has fallen on the #6 Penske Porsche 963 for a technical infringement and so, this promotes the BMW M Hybrid V8 to the victory, and... thusly promotes the #31 Whelen Action Express Cadillac V Series R to a second-place finish, and a well-deserved and well-earned second place. We hung tough with the German cars all day and were close enough to give them a run for their money the whole time. This is a sweet, and justly earned promotion for Action Express.
The specific penalty for the Porsche pertains to wear underneath the skid block, the piece of either wood or high strength metal under the floor of the car, that protects the undercarriage and chassis, and also must be there for legality reasons. Insofar as the Porsche team violating the rules with the skid block, this has happened with certain types of race cars before in that if a certain portion (measured metrically in millimeters), is worn away, the car fails the legality and homologation tests and thus is disqualified and demoted back to the tail end of the field in their class.
Oh, I know what you're thinking. Chuckle, gloat, in yo' face! Right? Well, that is true, although we do know that there are more races still to come this season. We have a whole second half of the championship campaign to be ready for and of course, as I said in the conclusion of my race report, it is coming up soon north of the border in Canada at the fabled Mosport Park.
Mosport Park, I cannot say if it is known as a Cadillac track. But I think Action Express have won there before. So as always, we have as good a chance as anybody to go for the victory. Celebrated this now promoted result for our podium effort with an ice cream bar. I think that was a proper toast to a great team. We are going to keep going. There is now only one more step on the podium we need. It has been a good while since our last triumph at Sebring in March, and our next one is just around the corner. This is a fabulous steppingstone in such an endeavor. We will find out, together, on Sunday, July 9th, what happens next in the saga of Action Express racing season 2023 in a wee while. Stay tuned, everybody. This novel is getting interesting once again as the chapters continue to be written.
*As of now, the Porsche team is filing a protest insofar as their penalty assessed by IMSA. We will have to wait and see. Hoping that this promotion will stick, and AXR keeps a well deserved second place finish. Stay tuned. I don't believe this is over yet.

6 Hours of Watkins Glen: Hour 6 (the finish)
Riberas makes a pass in the pit lane on exit but the stewards will make a call and he'll have to give it up. He was ahead of a second car. Oh boy. Trouble for Vasser Sullivan #14. Pit lane speed violation! Oh my! They will have to serve a drive through penalty and are doing so now. Antonio Garcia goes by and I think Daniel Serra in the Ferrari will do likewise. Corvette now lead GTD Pro in the final hour of the race. 58 minutes to go. Time to fight. It's within the final hour of the motor race. All three and a half miles of Watkins Glen, as Connor De Philippi has only 5.9 seconds over Nick Tandy. Great battle in LMP3 between Garrett Grist and Felipe Fraga playing a game of chicken on the brake pedal into the inner loop.
Hard to see if Fraga gave the place up or if Grist made the pass. Irishman Wayne Boyd from Belfast is leading LMP3 and was a winner at the 2015 Formula Ford Festival and an 2020 European Le Mans LMP3 champion. Corvette Racing now lead in GTD Pro with Jack Hawksworth now having to do the chasing after the pit lane speeding penalty. Fraga pressing Grist, rattling his cage, using him up. Oh my! Fraga off the road into the grass! Grist wants more of this. The gloves are off. It is go time. Garrett Grist passes by Sebastien Bourdais in the other GTP Cadillac! Oh my! The other great comeback is with the #1 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3. Bryan Sellers has handed the car off to Madison Snow for the finish of the motor race.
50 minutes now remaining in the race. Time is of the essence. Snow is going to do all he can to reel in Jan Heylen and Aaron Telitz in GTD as well. Very reminiscent of their efforts of a win at the 12 Hours of Sebring. Jack Hawksworth is monstering Antonio Garcia in GTD Pro. Reminiscent of the Fraga and Grist fight in LMP3. BMW and Connor De Philippi in the lead of the motor race. BMW #25 in the pit lane from the overall and GTP lead. Connor De Philippi to the pit lane. Pipo Derani being harried by Tom Blomqvist for third place.
Nick Tandy is in hot pursuit of course of the BMW of De Philippi. Derani clearing slower traffic. De Philippi on cold tires. Now, Pipo Derani can go on the attack. BMW Technical Director Brandon Fry working with BMW Motorsport, a global program coming from the headquarters in Munich, Germany. BMW's last prototype overall victory was in 2000 at Silverstone with the Schnitzer program with J.J. Lehto and Jorg Muller. That was with the V12 LMR. Pipo Derani 11 seconds behind Connor De Philippi. He has to make up ten seconds in 42 minutes.
Tandy in the Penske Porsche still leads and has yet to make his final pit stop as now, Jan Heylen also being chased down by the BMW M4 GT3 of Madison Snow against the Porsche 911 GT3R. Snow covers him and moves to second in GT Daytona leading the championship. They were on the back foot with a steering wheel issue earlier on. They are chasing down or trying to chase down Aaron Telitz in the #12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3 leading by 33 seconds. In GTD Pro, the battle goes on between Antonio Garcia in the factory Covette C8.R and Jack Hawksworth in the #14 Vasser Sullivan Lexus followed by Daniel Serra in the #62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 296 GT3.
Nick Tandy makes his final stop at Porsche. Matthieu Jaminet will take the #6 Porsche 963 home to the end of the race. Pipo Derani into turn one and Jaminet is not nbottled up bejind an LMP3 car. Derani makes his way past a GTD car. De Philippi has passed the Porsche ahd so now, Derani is going to catch De Philippi and Tom Blomqvist is still in the fight too. We could see a fifth different winner in five races. De Philippi is matching Jaminet. 34 minutes to go yet. BMW's only GTP win was right here at the Glen with Davy Jones and the late, great John Andretti in 1986 with the March BMW chassis.
Pipo Derani tagged the #16 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3R. In GTD Pro, Hawksworth is catching Antonio Garcia hand over fist and now, Daniel Serra is pushing hard. Pipo Derani scything past the GTD Pro cars. Traffic will play a factor. Jack Hawksworth reeling in Antonio Garcia in GTD Pro. Watkins Glen was designed by engineering professors from Cornell University. Located on the southern tip of Seneca Lake at 3.4 miles with the inner loop added in 1992 after Tommy Kendall's massive crash in the Chevrolet Intrepid GTP.
The Boot extended the length of the course from 2.35 miles to 3.37 miles. Of course they raced through the village of Watkins Glen, New York with the sports cars in the very early days in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Corvette, Lexus., Ferrari in GTD Pro, the top three. Corvette disputed their tire penalty from earlier but the marshals did not buy it. Jack Hawksworth continues to have his hands full with Daniel Serra. Daniel Serra is really motoring currently. All three of these cars though are definitely in fuel management mode.
Still 25 minutes left on the board. The Ferrari is a second quicker than the Corvette and half a second quicker than the Lexus. Corvette Racing has not won since Sebring 2022. Ferrari would love to back up their overall Le Mans win with a GTD Pro victory. The lead gap has stabilized at 6.3 seconds between Connor De Philippi and Matthieu Jaminet. Pipo Derani in third and Tom Blomqvist in fourth spot. BMW, Porsche, Cadillac, Acura. Sometimes the LMP2 and LMP3 cars do not see the GTP cars. In GTD Pro the battle is on once more. Jack Hawksworth has taken the lead and Daniel Serra has also passed Antonio Garcia.
I think Garcia was taken by surprise by both of them. Daniel Serra is faster than is Jack Hawksworth. Front engine 5 liter V8 naturally aspirated Lexus vs. the turbocharged mid engine 3-liter V6 Ferrari. Vasser Sullivan and Lexus are the GTD Pro championship leaders as we start the second half of the 2023 IMSA WeatherTech Championship season. De Philippi five seconds to the good over Jaminet. Jaminet is closing up. Pipo Derani in the Cadillac, the sole remaining Cadillac, in third spot. 17 minutes to go with 50+ cars on the road still. The BMW factory came with more than 100 people, the CEO of BMW globally came there.
They knew they had to build and they have been building. They could very well win today still. Connor De Philippi and John Edwards nearly won in GTD Pro last year. This could be medicine for their camp. Matty Jaminet is now coming in a hurry! De Philippi has lost time! De Philippi balked by Rexy, the dinosaur Porsche 911 GT3R! Yikes! Connor De Philippi is putting in the drive of his life to hold off Porsche's Matthieu Jaminet. He is a mega star. He has been sensational in the prototype ranks in 2023 so far.
Jaminet is like Pac Man, eating the gap up. There is nothing in it and nearly gets balked by the BMW M4 GT3 from Turner Motorsports. Six hours of racing will come down to the last handful of moments. It appears my pals at Action Express will end up on the podium after leading a good chunk of the first half of the motor race today. Racing to the end in the 6 Hours of the Glen with only ten minutes to go now. Hawksworth has a slight break but here comes Serra in GTD Pro just behind LMP3 traffic. The Ferrari has come alive. Hawksworth will force Serra to take the long way.
De Philippi negotiating the GTD traffic. Jaminet has to crack the throttle. Turbo V8's in both these cars. 4 liters for BMW and 4.6 liters for the Porsche. The #13 AWA LMP3 car of Matt Bell spins in turn one and continues. Just over eight minutes to go and a big lockup for Connor De Philippi. He is under pressure. He is feeling the heat from Matthieu Jaminet in the Porsche. Pipo Derani remains in third place. Oh my! There has been a pass for the lead as Matthieu Jaminet has passed Connor De Philippi.
Through to the toe of The Boot. De Phillippi got balked behind the GTD leading Lexus. De Philippi went off into the marbles. Jaminet has taken off. Less than five minutes of racing to go. Jack Hawksworth could win GTD Pro, and Bill Auberlen has clobbered the wall! He might have flipped that car! Three minutes and 40 seconds to go. Full Course Yellow! Wow! This is it. The race is going to be over. That was a massive accident. Bill Auberlen getting out of the car under his own steam. Auberlen flips onto his roof in turn ten! He is definitely shaken up, favoring his shoulder.
The most successful driver in IMSA in the wins category and that is a horrible accident. Up, over, and out. Wow. The right rear suspension fully collapsed on that race car. Holy smokes! Fit as a fiddle nearly 55 years old. The field cruising behind the safety car. Porsche are going to earn their second win of the season, in the hands of last year's GTD Pro co-champion. So this will be victory number two for the Porsche Penske team while the sister #7 had a hybrid issue. They did not have a good week at Le Mans but now they are going back to victory lane.
George Kurtz and company are going to win in LMP2 competition with Ben Hanley and with Nolan Siegel. In the LMP3 class it will be a victory for Felipe Fraga and Riley Motorsports with four straight victories. In GTD Pro and GTD Lexus are going to sweep both classes. #14 in GTD Pro and #12 in GTD. Vasser Sullivan have won both classes on the same day for the first time ever.
It is Jack Hawksworth and Ben Barnicoat winning in GT Daytona Pro while in GT Daytona it is the trio of Frankie Montecalvo, Aaron Telitz, and Parker Thompson.
Overall/GTP: #6 Tandy/Jaminet Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963
LMP2: #04 Kurtz/Hanley/Siegel Crowdstrike Racing by APR Oreca 07
LMP3: #74 Robinson/Fraga/Burdon Riley Motorsports Ligier JS P320 Nissan
GT Daytona Pro: #14 Hawksworth/Barnicoat Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3
GT Daytona: #12 Montecalvo/Telitz/Thompson Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3
Next up for the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship is a return to sprint racing mode north of the border as the series goes to Canada, to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (Mosport Park), for the Chevrolet Grand Prix coming up in two weeks. We'll see you north of the border in Canada, eh, for the next event on the calendar. Bye for now.
6 Hours of Watkins Glen: Hour 5
So, the battle is definitely turning on in both of the GTD classes in GTD Pro and GTD regular. Jan Heylen chasing down Parker Thompson. Jack Aitken now in the overall lead of the motor race for Action Express. Can the team keep the Cadillac out front searching for their second win of 2023 and their second win in an endurance race? We'll find out. The Risi Competizione Ferrari, Heart of Racing Aston Martin, and WeatherTech Mercedes all scrapping. In replay, look, into the Inner Loop, elbows are out, and some argy bargy there, look, in the inner loop! Well, well, well. That was a bit of a shemozzle indeed. Win at any and all costs for Risi Competizione. Daniel Serra and Davide Rigon sharing the car of course.
Jordan Pepper, the South African, was a contender with Iron Lynx. Pepper says that Andrea Caldarelli is OK and so is Rob Ferriol. The LMP3 car thought he could drive over the top of the GTD Pro cars. Lexus Marketing Vice President Venay Shehani is extremely proud and happy to see the brand in contention and leading the points championship currently in GTD Pro. Colin Braun is perhaps closing in on Jack Aitken little by little. This will be quite the battle if it comes to that between AXR and MSR. Aitken is indeed pushing but so is Colin Braun. Ben Hanley leads LMP2. Nico Varronen in LMP3 and Lexus in both GTD class with Barnicoat leading Pro and Thompson leads GTD, Ben Barnicoat, and Parker Thompson.
Nick Yelloly has now passed the #6 Porsche 963 and now the #7 sister car is back on track after getting the hybrid unit fixed. Cold tires for Nick Tandy. Jan Heylen, second in class in the #16 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3R. Jack Aitken still leads the motor race by two and a half seconds. Pipo Derani tells us that things have gone well for the Endurance Championship points. They refueled during the yellow. Fingers crossed with an hour and 40 minutes to go. Traffic ahead. Things are getting really busy. Nick Yelloly is going after Colin Braun, working through GTD traffic.
Aitken is doing well managing the traffic. The GTP cars are hustling at almost 200 miles an hour. It is tougher for the traffic to stay outside getting into the marbles. Track density here at Watkins Glen is like a car an inch. This is the biggest field at Watkins Glen since the mid 1980s. Road Atlanta in the Michelin Endurance Cup finale is even smaller. The BMW team finally did a two day test. Meanwhile, Colin Braun has caught Jack Aitken. Pipo Derani seems quietly confident about the chances of Action Express.
The 5.5-liter V8 finds the sweet spot in its torque curve. Normally aspirated V8 in that car compared to the other GTP cars being turbocharged. At Meyer Shank Racing, Tom Blomqvist will get back in the car for the final stint. Blomqvist says he has been dealing with some shoulder pain, maybe a pinched nerve or something. An hour and a half of racing still to go. Dylan Murry has had a great race and Ari Balogh the regular driver for JR III will be recovered shortly. Garrett Grist leading in the LMP3 class. Dylan Murry usually finishes the race. He started today before Dakota Dickerson and Garrett Grist went through their stints.
Jack Aitken leads Colin Braun by 1.3 seconds. Same margin in LMP2 between Christian Rasmussen and Ben Hanley as Felipe Fraga makes a move for the LMP3 lead. Jack Aitken has run a fabulous stint so far. Action Express continuing to hold off Meyer Shank and BMW Rahal Letterman Lanigan for the time being. There is a softer compound Michelin tire that was thought to be used in mixed conditions. Is it too warm now to go to those tires? It is hard to tell what compound it is. That is the Michelin Soft High Temperature tire. They had seven sets to work with for qualifying and the race and you don't have to do too many double stints except for temperature.
Do you roll the dice? Good question. Ben Hanley in the lane in the #04 CrowdStrike Racing by APR car. Ben Hanley, George Kurtz, and Nolan Siegel. Christian Rasmussen running well with Ryan Dalziel and Dwight Merriman in the #18 Era Motorsports car. LMP2 will grow larger and larger next year. Christian Rasmussen and Nolan Siegel may head for IndyCar in the near future. The same could be true with Josh Pierson and Alex Quinn. Sim racing can really help the real world of motorsport these days especially multi class endurance sports car racing.
Kyffin Simpson has done very well and he too coming through the Indy Next championship. United Autosports who compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship will have a two-car team in IMSA and Riley Motorsports too will move up to LMP2 with Felipe Fraga and Gar Robinson. They have an unbeaten run in LMP3 here at The Glen with an hour and 20 minutes of racing left. OK. The #60 Meyer Shank Acura is in the pit lane doing the overcut compared to the outlap of the #31 Whelen Cadillac. Pipo Derani is now at the wheel of the #31 Whelen Cadillac.
Nick Tandy now right on Pipo Derani's six. Tandy is turning up the heat! Tandy passes for the lead. Connor De Phillippi is the erstwhile leader in the BMW but on a different strategy compared to the Porsche and the Cadillac. De Philippi is now leading. BMW are the only brand who have not won in GTP yet. Jack Aitken tells us that in his first race at Watkins Glen, everything went well experiencing the track fully for the first time and finding some scary corners, but the weather is great. Action Express rally around Jack Aitken. Everyone is so kind to him and he has great teammates.
They have gotten straight back in it after Le Mans. Don't do everything differently. Jack Aitken, job well done. Action Express currently third behind the two German cars, the Rahal Letterman Lanigan BMW M Hybrid V8 and the sole remaining Penske Porsche 963. The Garage 56 effort took NASCAR back to Le Mans they returned and had great success as the roar of the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Cup car thrilled everyone, driven by Jenson Button, Mike Rockenfeller, and Jimmie Johnson. It was an amazing story as they finished the race and won the pit stop competition as well.
So many iconic moments and images of Garage 56. It has been a great experience for NASCAR with Garage 56. Connor De Philippi leads by 5.3 second but Nick Tandy is coming in a hurry and Pipo Derani is a further 2 seconds behind. Lexus #14 pitting from the GTD Pro lead with Ben Barnicoat leading in class by 20 seconds over Parker Thompson and Aaron Telitz. Actually, Telitz is in the GTD lead. Parker Thompson ahead of Sellers, Legge, and Frey. Barnicoat over Garcia, Juncadella, and Serra.
Madison Snow will take the #1 BMW M4 GT3 to the finish. The Iron Dames Lamborghini has also made a scheduled pit stop. Ditto for Heart of Racing. Rahel Frey in the Lambo to the end.
6 Hours of Watkins Glen: Hour 4
Parker Thompson now takes over the #12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3 from Frankie Montecalvo with Aaron Telitz also in the car I believe. Yes indeed. All of the GT Daytona class will look different in 2024. Now, Robby Foley is in the lane. There will be a customer Corvette program. Jordan Taylor might want to get back into prototypes after winning in DPi. Can he look to coming back to GTP? He will have to switch manufacturers if he wants to come back to his dad's team with possibly having two cars for them next year. Michael Dinan now at the wheel of the #96 Turner Motorsports BMW M4 GT3. The sole remaining BMW M Hybrid prototype in GTP is out in front between the two GTD cars, the meat in the sandwich.
Thompson now right on Dinan's six. Dinan has to let him go. No grip in the tires. Don't push too hard to hitting the blue Armco. Thompson to the lead. Discretion is definitely the better part of valor. Dinan settling in and starting to feel the car. A warm day above 80 degrees with a Real Feel temperature in the 90s. Nolan Siegel in the #04 APR CrowdStrike LMP2 also racing single seaters. Danny Formal in the lane in the #93 Racer's Edge with Wayne Taylor Racing Acura NSX GT3. Formal sharing with Ashton Harrison and Kyle Marcelli. Lexus #14 now retakes the lead in GTD Pro. Barnicoat, Caldarelli, Gounon, Rigon. Four brands in the top four. Lexus, Mercedes, Lamborghini, Ferrari.
A wheel off to the outside of the track. I think that is the one lost by the #10. #31 to the lane from the lead with Alexander Sims. He is finding his feet aboard the Cadillac GTP car. Driver change it looks like with Jack Aitken. They had a very tough Le Mans race did my buddies here. Iain Watt said that they are building a notebook and doing testing at Watkins Glen and then going to Mosport and continuing to go for it. You have to be there and we are there right now. It is Alexander Sims doing a double stint.
Easy on the brakes, get tire temperature. Jack Aitken lost control in the rain at Le Mans and our boys continued to build the notebook and get the setup right on the car. Will we be back at Le Mans in the future? I hope so. GTD Pro, the #79 WeatherTech Mercedes AMG GT3 in the lane. This is Jules Gounon driving currently sharing with Daniel Juncadella in a two driver team. So, Alexander Sims now runs in third spot and Porsche and Acura have come back by. We have had a variation in different duration races and different race tracks. We will be in for a sprint race next time out and more about that when this race ends.
A puncture for the #60 MSR Acura. The tire is fixed and the energy is replenished. Penalty, failture to adhere to minimum full refueling time for the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Acura. Matthieu Jaminet retakes the lead of the motor race and another tire issue and penalty for the #78 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 now driven by Patrick Liddy. Liddy, Misha Goikhberg, and Loris Spinelli. Michelle Gatting in thei Iron Dames Lamborghini is second. Patrick Liddy cut his teeth in the sprint race world of Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America also sanctioned by IMSA for five races.
Matthieu Jaminet leads GTP, Nolan Siegel in LMP2, Nico Varrone in LMP3, Ben Barnicoat in GTD Pro, and Patrick Liddy in GTD. What will Lexus be doing in the next couple years? They might have a new car. We'll see. We still have a wee bit more than a typical WeatherTech Championship sprint race to go yet. Patrick Liddy to the lane for service doing a double stint. Refueling and tire changing of course. Took a quick break and we are back at it again. Matthieu Jaminet slicing and dicing his way through traffic. Alexander Sims continues in second place.
Nick Tandy will finish this race. Of course, Meyer Shank Racing had a pit lane speeding penalty and a puncture to deal with. Vasser Sullivan bringing the heat in GT Daytona of course. GT Daytona Pro that is. Trouble for the #9 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3R of Klaus Bachler. Does he have a puncture? Is it a locked brake? It is a compressed sidewall and he is struggling through the last two corners. He really has to slow down. That wheel has welded itself to the stub axle. Wow. Thankfully it happened at the end of the lap.
He was a lucky luck boy there but will have to fight to stay on the lead lap. The whole carcass of the tire was wrapped around the suspension. Similar to how they had troubles at the Rolex 24 at the beginning of the year. It will be tough for the Pfaff Motorsports team to keep their podium streak alive. Meanwhile, the weather has dissipated and moved on. Nico Varrone leads LMP3 over Dakota Dickerson. Dakota Dickerson, Garrett Grist, and Dylan Murry. That is quite the trio. There are multiple cars on the lead lap between both LMP2 and LMP3.
Nolan Siegel leading LMP2 ahead of Alex Quinn and Christian Rasmussen along with Josh Pierson. Some bright, young talent headed either for open wheel racing or sports cars. Ben Barnicoat is now being monstered by Andrea Caldarelli. Lexus vs. Lamborghini in both GTD Pro and GTD alike. Again, the largest field seen in the 6 Hours of the Glen since 1984. Matthieu Jaminet continues to lead overall for Porsche Penske Motorsports ahead of Action Express Cadillac and Alexander Sims.
https://www.racingsportscars.com/photo/Watkins_Glen-1984-07-08.html
Check out the cars from the 1984 race at your leisure. I think you will enjoy seeing the history. Amazing is this area of New York in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York and of course the United States Formula 1 Grand Prix was run here for 20 years. Two hours and 25 minutes remaining in the race. A huge incident! The #01 Cadillac with Renger van der Zande in the mess with an LMP3 car and two GTD cars! The NTE Sport and Iron Lynx Lamborghini's in GTD pro and the #38 Performance Tech LMP3 car.
As fast and capable as Lamborghini has been, they are in trouble. In replay, let's see what happeend. Caldarelli got nailed by the #38 Performance Tech LMP3 car with Alex Kirby and Renger van der Zande had nowhere to go. Alex Kirby in limp home mode out of the laces of The Boot. GTP pit stop time for BMW, Whelen Cadillac, and more. BMW will lose spots. Nick Tandy taking over the #6 Penske Porsche. Jack Aitken has now leapfrogged to the lead of the motor race in the #31 Whelen Action Express Cadillac.
Survival is the key. Colin Braun has been uncorking fastest lap after fastest lap after fastest lap. Tom Blomqvist and Oliver Jarvis won the championship in DPi last year and of course Jarvis has gone back to Europe now. GTD Pro and GTD cars in the pit lane. Iron Dames in from the lead and Gold driver Rahel Frey gets into the car. Vasser Sullivan are hoping to double up in GTD Pro and GTD. So, Jack Aitken now leads over Colin Braun, Nick Tandy, Nick Yelloly and others in GTP. We will soon get back to racing.
Of course, the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen is the only IMSA endurance race run completeluy in the daytime hours. Michelle Gatting says that Iron Dames are stepping up and they are continuing to push. The brakes are beginning to be a challenge but they'll keep going. Ambient temperatures are extremely hot in the car. Doriane Pin and Michelle Gatting at Iron Dames have really put in the laps and been on pace. At Action Express, Jack Aitken wrecked on the opening lap of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It was very similar to Augusto Farfus today.
Can you imagine if Jack Aitken could steer the Whelen Cadillac to the win today? We'll see. Cold tires on a restart. Here we go. Get the heat into the tires. Be careful. Colin Braun and Nick Tandy are right on it. Jack Aitken up on the wheel. He has to erform. Colin Braun closing hard, though. Nick Tandy also remains in the fight for Porsche. As does Nick Yelloly in the sole remaining BMW. Colin Braun will have to hand off again to Tom Blomqvist before this race ends. We could see Blomqvist in open wheel racing in the very near future. No more than four hours in a six hour period. This is a six hour race of course.
Corvette are running a second off the pace in GTD Pro but they are still in the fight. Antonio Garcia third in class chasing Alex Riberas and Heart of Racing Aston Martin.
6 Hours of Watkins Glen: Hour 3
Remember that the slower GTD cars are just as on the limit as you are in a prototype, in a GTP car. Ferrari and Porsche have brought their GT drivers into prototype racing and to a certain extent GM with Cadillac has too. A bumpy surface to the inside in the Inner Loop. James Hinchcliffe has driven sports cars before, one of our colleagues here on Peacock and he ran well in the Mazda MX-5 races earlier this weekend. Another close call for BMW #25 with LMP3 and GTD both! Yikes! We should now see a battle between Lamborghini and Lexus. Pin chasing Montecalvo down. Excuse me. Michelle Gatting now at the wheel of the #83 car. Doriane Pin has impressed completely in all phases of GT racing. Catching is one thing, passing is another.
Montecalvo is the villain of the peace here. This is going to be sketchy with the LMP3 cars! Tijmen van der Helm in the #5 JDC-Miller Motorsports Porsche 963 goes by. He is sharing that car with Mike Rockenfeller of course. Gatting and Montecalvo will be flat out up through the esses. The GT3 cars produce a ton of downforce just as much as the prototypes do. The Lamborghini has good straight line speed from the top of the esses to the inner loop. Montecalvo now being chased by the #78 US Racetronics Lamborghini with Misha Goikhberg at the wheel of it. Goikhberg quicker than Montecalvo. Robby Foley in the #96 Taurner Motorsports BMW is also joining the party or looking for an invitation.
They are having a little party, and they didn't invite me! Josh Burdon also going for it in the #74 Riley Motorsports LMP3. Jaminet gets squeezed by the #62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 296 GT3. Michelle Gatting is crushing it, currently, and Frankie Montecalvo is having to play catch up. Matthieu Jaminet will now have to slice and dice his way through GTD traffic and Felipe Nasr in the sister Porsche is going to get stymied. Michelle Gatting continues leading GT Daytona. Doriane Pin says she had a great start and followed the GTD Pro cars before the first Full Course Yellow and safety car scramble.
She was able to overtake and manage her tires as well. So, this race is over 1/3rd complete. They will keep pushing. They are racing drivers. In racing, gender does not matter. If you are able to prove yourself as a driver, go for it. Boys and girls, if you want to go racing, go for it. Vasser Sullivan Lexus has been improving their chemistry and energy as a team constantly. Eight podiums on the bounce going back to 2022. The same is true for Iron Dames. Iron Dames have won a race at Spa Francorchamps in Belgium and she won in Ferrari Challenge in Europe as well. Matthieu Jaminet in the #6 Porsche opening a 6.3 second gap on teammate Felipe Nasr in the #7 sister Penske Porsche 963.
Alex Quinn leads LMP2. Dakota Dickerson leads LMP3. Felipe Nasr to the lane in the #7 Porsche 963. Trouble for Nasr! He has to go behind the wall! Oh boy! Nasr in trouble. They are troubleshooting or parking the car for the day. Think about the hybrid systems. There is a light at the bottom of the windscreen to tell if the system is safe to touch. Is it charged? Is it discharged? Only touch it if it is green, if it is discharged. If it is red or flashing, don't touch it. You'll get zapped into oblivion. The car is safe.
Well, well, well. Trouble too, look, for Jarett Andretti as he has damaged and has gone off the road someplace. Driver change to Gabby Chaves. So, Andretti did spin coming off turn ten and into turn 11. The AMR safety team members are in conference with the Porsche mechanics. Did the light change colors? Everyone keeping their distance from the car. Maybe it went into an unsafe mode. You need a mat and a pair of special gloves to make sure the car is discharged. Stand on the side of the tub and jump. That is how you escape.
Be careful. It is extreme voltage. Bail out! It is like getting struck by lightning otherwise. The #5 JDC-Miller Motorsports Porsche in the lane, Dutchman Tijmen van der Helm at the wheel of it. Nolan Siegel takes over the LMP2 lead from Alex Quinn and Ryan Dalziel. Some teams will have an opportunity to look for outliers like Indy Next drivers Christian Rasmussen and Nolan Siegel. Paul Loup Chatin now at the controls of the #52 PR1/Mathiasen LMP2 entry. The #96 Turner Motorsports BMW M4 GT3 has made up places. Robby Foley driving right now along with Dinan and with Patrick Gallagher.
Michael Dinan was in the race at Le Mans and able to finish second in LM GTE Am getting on the podium. Three wheels on me wagon for the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Acura of Filipe Albuquerque! John Edwards, too, in the #95 sister Turner Motorsports BMW M4 GT3 in a spot of bother. Alexander Sims now back up to fourth in GTP. #95 is John Edwards sharing with Chandler Hull and Bill Auberlen. Cars have to go wide as Albuquerque is crawling back to the pit lane. Yup. The left rear wheel is gone from the Acura #10 even with the exle still turning. How did the wheel come off? Je ne sais pas. I don't know.
A new rear wheel on the car. Fuel going in the tank. The wheel nut went on. I wonder though. If that tire departs again in a fast part of the course you could be in for Mr. Toad's wild ride. In replay, we can see he knows he has trouble in the esses up the hill. The camber is out of whack. John Edwards went three wide with a couple LMP3 cars and went off in the grass. More penalties handed down for tire requirements for tire pressure. #62, #78, #83. Risi Competizione, US Racetronics, and Iron Dames. Is that a tire pressure sensor registering zero? Or is it below minimum required pressure.
If the marshals, see zero, it is erroneous. 54 of the 57 cars that started are still running. Pit stop time for the #01 Ganassi Racing Cadillac of Renger van der Zande. #10 now down a lap and will have a second lap put on by leader Matthieu Jaminet. Albuquerque defendings from Jaminet. Jaminet followed by Blomqvist, Sims, and Yelloly. All four makes. Porsche, Acura, Cadillac, BMW. These cars have torque sensors for the hybrid and consistent mass. Matthieu Jaminet to the pit lane within the window. No driver change. Fresh Michelin tires and fuel. Jaminet does a double stint.
The GTP cars sound like the world's fastest golf cart until the internal combustion engine fires up. Alexander Sims now up to second in the #31 Cadillac 8.9 seconds behind leader Tom Blomqvist. Tom Blomqvist is one of the fastest drivers in the IMSA paddock right now. Felipe Nasr says that he had alarms related to the hybrid systems on the dash. The power loss and hybrid drive got worse. All power lost on the hybrid system. Trouble in paradise for the #6, penalty, failure to adhere to powertrain parameters. Oh boy. Maybe the hybrid kilowatt output has been exceeded. These systems are incredibly complex.
It is only a warning, currently, for the #6 car. Everything is monitored by the torque sensors. #60 to the pit lane from the lead with Blomqvist at the wheel of it. One car from each brand still in the fight. Meyer Shank, Action Express, Team Penske, and BMW RLL. Meyer Shank Racing might just have confidence to put Colin Braun in the car for the final stint. #60 ahead of #6, the Penske Porsche and now, Jaminet dusts Blomqvist! Alexander Sims leads the motor race in the #31 Action Express Cadillac. The GTD lead battle now heating up between Lexus and BMW. Robby Foley wants to double up after winning Michelin Pilot Challenge yesterday.
The #9 Pfaff Motorsports GTD Pro Porsche is in the fight as well with Klaus Bachler at the controls. Bachler chasing the Lamborghini #63 with Andrea Caldarelli at the wheel of it. That is the Jordan Pepper, Andrea Caldarelli car. Trouble on the right front fender for the #80 AO Racing Porsche. That's "Rexy" needing bandages for the good old dinosaur. The #14 Lexus RC F GT3 in the lane. Nico Varrone who is one of the GTE Am Le Mans winners at Corvette currently in the #17 AWA LMP3 car. So, we are coming close again to the end of another racing hour. Corvette Racing have had a fraught race today.
Taylor says that it is a long race and they don't have the pace they want. They had a penalty earlier on as well. They are hoping for a yellow. We have a new GT3 spec Corvette coming for next year which will be in private hands with a purpose built GT3 car.
6 Hours of Watkins Glen: Hour 2
The GTP cars have been sparking through the Inner Loop. Deletraz knew he had to give it up. The LMP2/LMP3 shemozzle continues and now, the #42 NTE Sport Lamborghini has crunched the barrier in the laces of The Boot. Rob Ferriol at the wheel of it. He got tagged by the #70 Inception Racing McLaren of Brendon Iribe. Iribe sharing with Fredrik Schandorff and Ollie Milroy while in the #42 NTE Sport Lamborghini being shared along with Ferriol by Luke Berkely and Jaden Conwright. Meanwhile, Bourdais is off the road in turn ten! He has tagged the Armco with the right front. The Cadillac is very stout. Bourdais loses it all by his lonesome. That is stranfgth and he almost gets clobbered by the sole remaining BMW! These GTP cars are a handful on the slip angle! When you get into a yaw situation, they handle like an open wheel car and just lose it off throttle.
I think Connor De Philippi tagged Bourdais! They are heavier, the GTP cars, and have less downforce than the Daytona Prototype International cars that raced from 2017-2022. Left front damage for BMW. These bodywork parts are very modular just like if you have played with Legos as kids. Connor De Philippi and Nick Yelloly need a new nose under Full Course Yellow. This is emergency service. The #01 in the lane as well. The nose parts of these cars cost $150,000 in total! Yikes! These are spaceships. Space age machines. Renger van der Zande will get into this car. Le Mans recently completed, and there are more parts that have to get back from Europe after Le Mans, plus the endless craziness with supply chain trouble and so on.
They rip off the rear cheese wedge, the fender on the left rear and now, he is going to lose downforce. Relatively, it is slightly less but the diffuser and the rear tail section are so aerodynamically optimized. The GTP car is not the horsepower of the old LMP900 open top cars or the original Daytona Prototypes. But these cars as awesome as they are, they are extremely hard to drive. These teams are running a much harder Michelin tire. Hydraulic mechanical brakes on the front and brake by wire on the rear of these GTP cars, all of them. The Cadillac's, the Porsche's, the Acura's, and the BMW's, plus all the Hyper Car entries in World Endurance as well, which are slightly different, but similar to the GTP cars.
IMSA drivers did well at Le Mans. 56 drivers. Braun, Kurtz, Keating, and Varrone, and others did so well and of course, we saw the Garage 56 NASCAR Cup Camaro which was awesome! The Cup car was handling a lot like a GT car at Le Mans. It was unbelievable of course. We talked a ton about it. So, now we are back to green. Maybe we can keep it clean for the next 45 minutes. Colin Braun wide through turn one being harried by Mike Rockenfeller in the #5 JDC-Miller Motorsports Porsche 963. We could see more customer 963 cars this year and next year both.
No LMP3 cars next year. The #01 Cadillac back on pit lane with Renger van der Zande replacing Sebastien Bourdais and other than the diffuser I think they've escaped well. Pipo Derani continuing to chase Nick Tandy. LMP2 is not a part of the FIA WEC next year and we will see bucketloads more LMP2 cars for IMSA next year and we will still see LMP3 in the VP Sports Car Challenge. Apex speeds are not so different but it is the straight line speed for the GTP cars that is incredible! Just like in the 1980s and '90s with GTP 1.0. Connor De Philippi has to play catch up indeed.
So, the #01 Cadillac is now back on track. Ganassi and Michelin are looking at the tire that just came off the car. The Michelin technicians are having a good look and the telemetry for the tire status is now working. Corvette C8.R #3, with the left front tire left in the lane outside the box, Corvette Racing are going to cop a penalty. That is Jordan Taylor, and Antonio Garcia. Daniel Serra, meanwhile, the GTD Pro pole man, is eighth. After their pit stop, Davide Rigon said they got hit by the #70 Inception Racing McLaren we talked about before.
You've lost the plot an hour into the motor race if you are having argy bargy with other contenders. Everyone is still in the motor race. Well over 50 starters of course. We have dark, ominous, foreboding clouds up above that could release sprinkles in a couple of hours. Ferrari won the Nurburgring 24 Hours and they won the 24 Hours of Le Mans 50 years after they won before. In Maranello, they celebrated with the two 499P Hyper Cars. How fun! The Tifosi loved it! Will we see an American Cadillac win Le Mans in the future? Perhaps an Action Express Cadillac? We'll see.
The golden era of sports car racing is right here right now. The '50s-'90s were fabulous. But now we really are seeing it too. #31 and #10 have three driver lineups and Pipo Derani is stymied in traffic a wee bit. Deletraz right on Derani's six. Acura are behind since they did not run Le Mans like Porsche and Cadillac did. Derani patient on the throttle and then commits. Different drivers drive the same car and a different driver will behave entirely differently. Luis Perez Companc leads LMP2 now at AF Corse in car #88. Perez Companc sharing with Lilou Wadoux and Nicklas Nielsen.
Mikkel Jensen said that in an LMP2 car they can brake later and hold up a GTP car. Orey Fidani in the #13 LMP3 car leads the #36 of Jarett Andretti and Dylan Murry is coming. AWA vs. Andretti Autosport vs. JR III. Lexus #14 and #12 are in the lead in both GTD Pro and GTD. Lexus, Lambo, Porsche, BMW in GTD Pro. Lexus, Lambo, Lambo, BMW in GTD. Hawksworth followed by Jordan Pepper, Patrick Pilet, and Chandler Hull, and then, Frankie Montecalvo, Doriane Pin, Misha Goikhberg, and Michael Dinan. We are an hour and a half into the race now. The rain could be coming. We have gorgeous weather now, but keep an eye on ye olde radar after the monsoon in quali yesterday.
So, Matt Campbell leads Nick Tandy. The six hour race here at The Glen is exhausing but not super strenuous like Daytona, Sebring, Le Mans, or Petit Le Mans. Deletraz reeling in Derani now. Traffic all over the shop. Andretti, Dylan Murry, Orey Fidani, and Tonis Kasemets top four in LMP3. Colin Braun passes and the McLaren squeezes the two LMP3 cars! Holy cow! The GTD cars of course have antilock brakes. Dylan Murry sees the #60 Acura opening the door and into the apex he nearly gets it slammed in his face and Brendon Iribe gets clattered and has to back out of it.
The #36 car has been missing the cheese wedge. The fender and the cheese wedge. Fender? No. Sidepod. Flapper slapper? Uh... I don't understand that one. Tipping it into The Boot again. Jarett Andretti still under pressure into the toe of The Boot. Porsche still dominating in first and second. No Le Mans hangover for them after having a dud Le Mans and not the race they wanted. This traffic is a real ice cream headache for the GTP drivers. You have to be so patient waiting to go back to power rolling through the corners. Tandy will get a run on Campbell who gets balked by the GT Daytona BMW M4! That's one of the Turner Motorsports cars.
Keep in mind, high percentage moves through traffic. This is mentally exhausting but these drivers are made of strong stuff. Porsche's remain at the top of the shop. Tandy squirming around on his tires. Roger Penske looking on. I don't think Tandy trusts the Porsche 963 at this moment and the handling could be slighly going away. The throttle input and brake input with these GTP cars is so important to save fuel and save tire as well. Roll the minimum apex speed and blend back to the power. This traffic is bonkers. The #8 Tower Motorsports LMP2 car has no radio communication, so use the old school pit board, or the smoke signals. Salih Yoluc sharing with Kyffin Simpson and Will Stevens. Turkey, Barbados, and England, the nations of those drivers.
Lexus #14 will pit soon, and Ben Barnicoat will be in it. The #20 High Class Racing entry in the lane working on brakes and fueling the car as well I think and a nose change. High Class Racing spun and whacked the wall with Mark Kvamme and then lost it again and then nearly tangled with my pals at Action Express and got tangled up with a couple LMP3 cars. The pit crew kicking the diffuser and the rear wing into place. Cadillac #01 in the pit lane again. This is a mechanical black flag for tire pressures. The marshals were looking at that and the driver is saying, "give us a break! The car is fine!"
Nick Tandy now in the lane. Under green flag racing they will stagger their strategy or so I would think. For the safety of the teams there is a minimum pressure to maintain rigidity in the sidewalls so they don't compress and degrade before the tire goes pop. Four fresh Michelin's, fuel, and now, Matthieu Jaminet into the car. So, "jam jam" will be into the fight. Colin Braun in the #60 Meyer Shank Racing Acura is fighting the car. Tom Blomqvist is suited and booted getting ready for his stint. This Acura ARX-06 just has a two driver lineup. Should three drivers be a requirement in GTP? Not necessarily for six hours.
The sister #7 Penske Porsche 963 is in the lane as well. That is Felipe Nasr taking over from Matt Campbell. The #31 and the #10 in the lane as well. This was close! #6 rockets past both the Acura and the Cadillac? Back to the lead? Hang on a minute. Ah. #6 at the top of the shop. No. Never mind. Braun, Nasr, Jaminet, Albuquerque. This is the top four. The driver has to keep his helmet radio plugged in on the pit tower so his co-driver can tell him, "OK, mate, here's what the car is doing and how it is handling." There are fuel settings and other systems that need to be discussed. The #14 GTD Pro Lexus RC F GT3 in the lane with a data stick swap.
Ben Barnicoat replacing Jack Hawksworth and now the #9 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3R is in with Patrick Pilet finishing his stint. The messages on the radio are very long. Push this button, turn this knob, reset your energy meter, mate. Jaminet going for it on Nasr in traffic! Traffic giveth. Traffic taketh away. Something evolving through the inner loop with the GTP cars bottoming out through that section of the course. In a GTD car, you think you have to go. Alexander Sims now in the #31 Whelen Cadillac moving up to fourth. The GTP cars are hard to control but the GT Daytona cars are tricky racing each other and against the prototypes.
Doriane Pin has a head of steam against Frankie Montecalvo. They were really quick at Le Mans in the GTE Am Porsche 911 RSR-19. Doriane Pin is the one woman driver who is really going places. She is special and fast and keeps her head down. Pin sharing the Lambirghini at Iron Dames with Rahel Frey and Michelle Gatting. Pin needs a banker lap while the #12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus is in the lane. Seven female drivers in the race this weekend. Doriane Pin, Michelle Gatting, Rahel Frey, Lilou Wadoux, Ashton Harrison, and Sheena Monk.
Timing your opportunities in traffic is a big deal. Many of these GTP drivers have run GT cars before so they know darn well what is going on and you just have to be smart.
6 Hours of Watkins Glen: Hour 1
Welcome, everybody, to the picturesque Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York, and Seneca Lake. Home of the fabled Watkins Glen International Raceway. In 1948, 75 years ago, sports car road racing in North America, began, on the streets of the town. In 1957, the original track itself, opened, and that original 3.4-mile layout, with modifications over the years, is still used today. Watkins Glen is synonymous with speed. 6 hours of sports car racing on Seneca Lake, it is time for a classic. The fastest road course in North America. Turn up the heat. Road racing's most hallowed ground. It is time to go racing. Let's do this!
This is race five of the championship. Weather has impacted the weekend. Will it influence the race today? We'll find out. The stars are here. Meyer Shank Racing, Wayne Taylor Racing, Action Express, Ganassi Racing, and so many more. The IMSA GTP class of the '80s and '90s were a golden era and now, GTP is back at Watkins Glen for the first time in 30 years. Sports car racing is hot, and the buzz is intoxicating. The golden era was not just back then. It is right here, right now. Qualifying for GTP was rained out. Meyer Shank Racing will have to start from the back with Tom Blomqvist and Colin Braun. BMW M RLL have also been quick. BMW want to do it on pace.
BMW the only brand that has not won in GTP yet. 29 of 57 cars are GT3 cars for GTD Pro and GTD. Vasser Sullivan and Pfaff Motorsports scrapping it out in the points championship fight. In GTD, it is the sister Vasser Sullivan Lexus at the top of the shop. LMP2 and LMP3 qualifying, the skies opened like crazy and it was chaos in LMP2 and LMP3. The Jr. III team of Ari Balogh had a big wreck. Dylan Murry will sub for Ari Balogh who was not feeling well after the wreck yesterday, sharing with Dakota Dickerson and Garrett Grist. 57 cars, the biggest field seen at the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen since the original GTP ran here in 1984, almost 40 years ago.
Five classes, 57 cars. 40 NASCAR cars, 21 IndyCars. The weather could play a factor too and we could see a wild, chaotic race too, with the weather in the area. Qualifying did not occur for the prototypes because of the horrid weather from yesterday but points were allocated for GTD Pro and GTD. Keys to victory include playing through the traffic. No three point turns. Pit boxes are smaller. Five feet smaller. Be committed for the out lap. The GTP cars on cold tires are going to be hard to control. Stay alert. Be careful.
We are 270 miles northwest of New York City. Braking zone in turn one. This is tricky. Thread the needle in The Inner Loop. No place to hide in the Inner Loop. Turn eight thropugh The Boot and into The Heel of the The Boot. Great circuit. We are going racing this time by. This is the shortest of the endurance races but it will be a challenge. Trouble, a slight hiccup for the #77 Volt Lightning Porsche 911 GT3R in the hands of Alan Brynjolfsson. He is fine. He is sharing with Trent Hindman and Max Root.
Penske Porsche and Action Express Cadillac on the front row. Watch for the brake lockup on the GTP cars on cold tires. Here we go. The BMW M Hybrid could be a spoiler today. OK. Let's do this! Green flag! Away we go! Nick Tandy leads over Pipo Derani and now, Sebastien Bourdais is moving and Augusto Farfus has already wrecked the #24 BMW! Holy smokes! Here comes the GTD Pro and GTD field but they have to wave this off. What? Green for GTD Pro and GTD! Unreal! Be careful. This is bananas. The BMW is dead in the water! That is so dangerous!
Shades of Bob Tulius' Jaguar wrecking here in 1984. Augusto Farfus trundling around and now we have Full Course Yellow on the speedway. IMSA... what were you blokes thinking?! Such a shocking turn of events early doors! Criminy! Well, now we can catch our breath. But what a shame for the #24 team. The GTD Pro and GTD spotters telling their drivers that it is good to go and then you see a prototype crunched into the barriers! By criminy! It was just a quick spin for Farfus. The sister car on cold tires had a similar incident in Free Practice 1. Farfus loses traction on acceleration, and... bang, into the Armco.
The start with the GTP cars on cold tires is so unbelievably tricky! You hear a massive zing of RPM. That was just a slight rise in RPM. You don't often hear the motor zing up like that. Vroom, vroom, vrooom, vroom.... crunch! BMW were the darkhorses but now they are down to a single bullet in the gun. Phillip Eng in the sister car had a similar issue in FP1. So, it is game over, day done for Augusto Farfus, and Philipp Eng. A seemingly harmless spin until the contact with the Armco barrier. The GTP teams have had issues with optimizing braking and drivability.
He is sitting there trying to restart the car with the GTD cars screaming past him when they were at the start of their own race. My gosh! Egad! That could have been much worse than it was. The corner worker made a mistake with the yellow flag vs. the green flag seeing Farfus move forward. But the positive is that a terrible situation was averted. The corner worker waves the green and then the yellow and then the green. My gosh! Just like the driver, your brain is going a million miles a minute. The field stacks up behind the safety car again. BMW #24 has had a best result of fourth and of course at Sebring in the most recent enduro they had a DNF with one car and a second place finish with the other.
That day of course, most of the GTP field was decimated in a late race wreck and my pals at Action Express were the winners. So it appears the nine-car GTP field is now down to eight. Racing here at The Glen for decades and decades whether it was through the village streets or the track itself. Track President Michael Printup is retiring after this year. We wish you will in your semi-retirement, mate. Enjoy the golf course, mate. Next time we are going to Mosport Park in Canada, and have more great tracks coming up. OK. Back to green. Nick Tandy heating the tires but we see Pipo Derani and Sebastien Bourdais chasing in the two Cadillac's.
Pipo Derani is extremely quick and so is Bourdais. These two Cadillac's are in the fight, the V Series R's, but for two different teams. We have had a break in the calendar, but all three of the top three drivers raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with their respective teams of course. In LMP2, Ben Keating is in the lead over Salih Yloluc. Tonis Kasemets leads LMP3 over Orey Fidani. Jordan Pepper for Lamborghini leads GTD Pro and Loris Spinelli also in a Lamborghini leads GTD. Take it easy over the curbs with the tire pressures coming up, in the Inner Loop.
The GTD boys and girls are gobbling up the curbs. Good battle here, look, between Madison Snow in the #1 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3 and the #79 Mercedes AMG GT3 of Jules Gounon. The spec is identical. The driver ratings are the only difference in the two GTD classes. Bill Auberlen passes Jordan Taylor. BMW vs. Corvette. Corvette with their GT3 program have made the official announcement. Turner Motorsports finished 1-2 in the Michelin Pilot Challenge race yesterday. Three wheels on me wagon for the #51 Rick Ware Racing Oreca LMP2 car! Eric Lux at the wheel of it. He might be able to trundle back to the pit lane.
Lux sharing with Devlin DeFrancesco and Pietro Fittipaldi. The whole wheel came off the car. The #023 Triarsi Competizione Ferrari 296 GT3 is serving a penalty for changing tires on the grid too late. Onofrio Triarsi, Charlie Scardina, and Alessio Rovera. Unscheduled stop for the #10 Acura ARX-06 receiving a mechanical black flag for minimum tire pressures with Ricky Taylor, Louis Deletraz, and Filipe Albuquerque. The #61 Ferrari 296 GT3 is in trouble. Simon Mann screaming on the radio "I have no power!" This is the #61 AF Corse car. Mann sharing with Lilou Wadoux and with Ulysse de Pauw.
Meanwhile, Connor De Philippi is reeling in Sebastien Bourdais hand over fist. Colin Braun wants a bite of the cherry as well, look. Mercifully, the #51 has gone behind the wall and I wonder if that car has suspension damage. All four GTP brands have the pace and run within a few tenths of a second of one another. Just amazing. LMP2 and LMP3 fighting into the toe of The Boot. We have seen three lead changes. Glen van Berlo leads Dylan Murry and Orey Fidani. Murry was drafted into the #30 JR III entry. Gar Robinson in the #74 LMP3 car and they are going to step up to LMP2 next year as LMP3 goes away. GTP will increase in size with more customer Porsche's and Lamborghini.
A lot of the LMP3 teams are looking at LMP2 and GTD. Bourdais fending off De Philippi and opening a gap on the BMW driver. Traffic playing a part and now, Pipo Derani is right on Nick Tandy's six. It is a Porsche vs. Cadillac wrestling match. Salih Yoluc, drafted into the #8 Tower LMP2 car is going for it but now, Derani can get a run on the Porsche for the lead of the motor race overall. In the case of the Rick Ware LMP2 car, Eric Lux took the car to the paddock. The tire did not cause too much damage. It was a sheared axle stub. Holy cow! Again, game over for Augusto Farfus. He admits he made a mistake on cold tires.
He just lost the rear end of the car. Oh no! AO Racing and "Rexy" has taken a chomp out of the fence! Right rear bodywork damage for P.J. Hyett who will stay out for the time being. Slow down there, dinosaur. He is going to leave debris wand there's smoke billowing from a split oil cooler. Pipo Derani clears Loris Spinelli. The GTP cars are dealing with traffic all day long. There is no such thing as a clean lap with 57 cars over 3.4 miles. On the brake by wire system, be careful. The #20 High Class Racing LMP2 car of Mark Kvamme gets tagged by Pipo Derani or, Kvamme turned in too soon.
Kvamme drafted in after one of the other drivers, Dennis Andersen, the Dane, felt sick and said "I need to rest and get well." Kvamme sharing with Ed Jones and Anders Fjordbch. Kvamme was anxious and had to wait. The #17 LMP3 car also spins off the road, the AWA Duqueine being driven by Anthony Mantella, Wayne Boyd, and Nico Varrone. Into the pit lane, the #9 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3R 992 model. Klaus Bachler sharing the car with Patrick Pilet in a two-driver team. Half an hour in and we are seeing a bunch of action. Just imagine the intensity of hour six!
This is unfolding a lot like what we see in a typical FIA World Endurance Championship race. So, Nick Tandy for Porsche continues in the lead of the motor race. Good scrap in LMP2. Ben Keating being chased by Steven Thomas and Salih Yoluc and George Kurtz has passed. These two both won in their classes at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Over 1/3rd of the field in this race ran at the 24 Hours of Le Mans including Action Express of course. Ben Keating and George Kurtz, two businessmen are also successful on the track. Wayne Taylor says IMSA black flagged them to repair a tire on the left rear.
Now, the #11 TDS Racing LMP2 Oreca has spun! He goe tipped by Salih Yoluc in the #8 Tower Motorsports car! Thomas sharing with Mikkel Jensen lead the LMP2 points and the third driver is Scott Huffaker. Now, the #8 is also in trouble after this and we are going to see cars pitting before we go Full Course Yellow. Thomas backs up and he has cars flying all over him! This is a blind turn! IMSA Marshals, guys, make sure these drivers are safe. Drivers, please use your heads! Yoluc was making a move on Keating, could not do it, and Thomas also had a head of steam. Yoluc was way too cavalier on that move and he'll cop a penalty for that for sure.
He copped a whack and will cop a penalty as well. #11 will head back to the paddock to get the car fixed and then come back in and keep on trucking. The whole left front corner is gone. Again, Full Course Yellow. Does Ben Kearing have damage? There is a little bit. He probably felt like getting hit by a meteor and he was off the road in the wet qualifying yesterday too Side by side through turn ten and Yoluc divebombed him. Thomas was only trying to avoid the other two blokes, he had no place to go, and... ker-runch!
What was, is now, GTP is back at the Glen! This is wonderful! Our friends Mike Joy, Bob Varsha, and Dorsey Schroeder, called those races back in the day as we join Leigh Diffey, Calvin Fish, and Townsend Bell in the booth today. The GTP teams will do energy replenishment with full fuel loads and some tire adjustments. We are also going to hear from our mate Brian Till in a wee while. So, the GTP cars have now pitted. #60 has leapfrogged the #31. Maybe MSR elected not to take tires and AXR did. Seven sets of tires and are now using two optional softer compounds if they choose.
New nose for the Tower Motorsports LMP2 #8. Yoluc may cop a penalty as we told you. Anthony Mantella was an innocent victim in the deluge yesterday. What a bear. They were also involved in the incident with the #20. AWA move to GTD next year. We will see how that works out. Many of the GTP cars are going to struggle for temperature and pressure on new tires, on stone cold tires. Colin Braun raced the Rolex 24 for the first time at age 16. He has won titles and the big races, originally from Texas. Braun has a golden opportunity with Meyer Shank Racing. He is a quiet achiever. He is able to excel in these high downforce prototypes.
The GTD Pro and GTD field en masse hits the lane. Risi Competizione, the #62 Ferrari 296 GT3 and Daniel Serra will stay in the car. The Inception Racing #70 McLaren 720S GT3 leads GTD. Loose tire bouncing down the pit lane! Oh dear! It was clonked by a car coming out of the box. I don't know who's tire that is. It was the Corvette Racing pit! Oh my! The marshal has to retrieve it. Jordan Taylor started the race. The Corvette is released and then, boom, the #23 of Alex Riberas, he did not see the tire. Any damage? It hit the splitter at the very least on the Aston Martin and not a scratch.
Welcome Brian Till to the booth. We have seen some craziness so far with the speed and the traffic of this 57-car field. Drivers are not patient enough right now. Cool it. Get it together out there boys and girls. We could see rain later on. We are ready to go back to green. Matty Campbell assumes the lead over Nick Tandy. Porsche Penske 1-2. Colin Braun is pressing Nick Tandy and the same is true between Pipo Derani and Renger van der Zande. Campbell has more tire temperature currently. In LMP2 both #8 of Yoluc and #11 of Thomas penalized.
Bryan Sellers in the lane with the #1 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3. #60 has a pit lane speeding penalty and the same for tire rotation elevated for the #33 Sean Creech Motorsports LMP3 car. #1 is Bryan Sellers, Madison Snow, and Corey Lewis. 1/3rd of the field have come back from Le Mans and are surely frazzled. #61 and #47 also cop pit lane speeding penalties, look. #61 is the Mann/Molina/de Pauw entry. #60 to the lane for their drive through penalty. #47 is one of the other Ferrari's, the Cetilar Racing 296 GT3 with an all-Italian driver lineup. George Kurtz has fallen down a bit and is second in LMP2 right now behind Luis Perez Companc.
The speed at which this game plays is really different. It is like having three baseball games going on at once. Major Leagues, Minor Lagues, and collegiate. BMW #1 in the lane. They are coming back out. The power cord for the steering wheel was disconnected from the dashboard! Oh my! Go through the gears in the pit lane. Everything seems OK. But the championship leader in GT Daytona goes a lap down. Pipo Derani to the outside of two of the Ferrari's and now, the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Acura of Louis Deletraz alongside Sebasiten Bourdais and here comes the sole remaining #25 BMW of Connor De Philippi.
Deletraz goes straight through and now De Philippi is pressing hard on the Cadillac.

Winner & Highlights of the Michelin Pilot Challenge Sahlen's 120 at The Glen
Welcome, everyone, to a wet and soggy Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York and Watkins Glen International Raceway. Today, on this rainy Saturday we bring you the beginning of the second half of the 2023 IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season. It was a bizarre WeatherTech Championship qualifying session in the second half with the LMP2 and LMP3 prototypes skating around in the wet after the GTD Pro and GTD cars went out on a dry track. So wet in fact that the stewards made a wise decision and did not even send any of the GTP cars out on track to qualify. That would have been a living nightmare. Better safe than sorry.
As for the GT4 and TCR cars in the production-based classes of Michelin Pilot Challenge, we have a TCR car on the pole position with the #37 L.A. Honda World Racing Honda Civic FL5 TCR at the top of the shop with Mat Pombo and Ryan Eversley sharing the car in today's race. It is TCR cars across the front row with the Honda flanked by the #17 Unitronic/JDC Miller Motorsports Audi RS3 LMS TCR of Chris Miller and Mikey Taylor, and the fastest Grand Sport (GT4) spec entry in third spot, the #72 Murillo Racing Mercedes AMG GT4 in the hands of Kenny Murillo and Christian Szymczak within a sea of TCR cars.
The grid is a real blended candy dish with lots of flavors and if it is indeed raining still at The Glen, we should see an exciting event. However, we may be experiencing a wee delay if the weather is in an iffy spot. Now we are set to go. Since 1948, the sounds of racing engines have echoed trhough Watkins Glen. 35 cars, 70 drivers, and two hours of motor racing. We join NBC Sports' Brian Till and Calvin Fish. Still some showers in the area but we have a wet racetrack declared. Grand Sport and TCR are back together. In the Grand Sport championship, we have seen four winners in four races. PF Racing, Turner Motorsports, Murillo Racing, and Winward Racing have all won in GS.
Stevan McAleer and Eric Filgueiras have been vaulted upwards in the points, 100 points behind Murillo Racing. Don't discount Daniel Morad and Bryce Ward. Recall in Detroit, Robert Megennis went over the top of Rory van der Steur! We join Hannah Newhouse and Matt Yocum in the pit lane. Robert Megennis has been placed on probation by the IMSA stewards. van der Steur Racing had a ton of damage to their Aston Martin. They found a new chassis that came from the United Kingdom. Rory van der Steur and Austin McCusker are ready to go. In TCR, parity and consistency have been the name of the game.
Mat Pombo, Ryan Eversley, and Honda, have five straight poles in the TCR class. Their two concerns for today are the Miller/Taylor Audi and the unpredictability of the rain this afternoon. Watkins Glen International is 275 miles northwest of New York City. It is very smooth with massive grip in the dry. Big commitment to maximize lap time. Turn one is the first overtaking zone. Roll speed there, thread the needle in the Inner Loop at turn five. Turn eight at the heel of The Boot also affords overtaking opportunities. 35 cars, 70 drivers of course.
Road Shagger Racing are back with a brand-new Audi RS3 LMS TCR. Jon Morley and Gavin Ernstone are the drivers of course. Team TGM and the Aston Martin's have two different setups. The #64 has a wet setup and the #46 has a dry setup. Ted Giovanis and Owen Trinkler in #64 and #46 shared by Hugh and Matt Plumb. McCumbee McAleer Racing and the #13 Ford Mustang GT4 might have their good fortune coming back with Jenson Altzmann and Chad McCumbee. The race will start this time by but under yellow to find out what the track conditions are with wet weather Michelin Pilot tires on the cars.
Again, we have a jumbled grid as we talked about at the top of the race report. Your setups are dependent on the weather, but roll the dice if you have to. TGM won a title with a Mercedes AMG GT4 in 2018 but have swapped between Chevrolet Camaro's, Porsche Cayman's and Aston Martin's in recent years. Safety car lights off and we are set to go green. The race clock has started and we will have a signle file restart procedure with a class split between GS and TCR.
Green flag! Away we go! Kenny Murillo leads and here comes the McLaren. Hard to find grip even though you can find the standing water. The new FL5 Honda Civic has had great speed as the TCR field gets underway and Harry Gottsacker in the Hyundai Elantra is making his move early doors. Into the laces of The Boot for the first time. Murillo is the rabiit, the guinea pig. The track has dried out since we had a lightning hold earlier on. Adam Adelson has started the #47 Nolasport Porsche Cayman he shares with Elliott Skeer. The minimum drive time is 40 minutes.
Feel out the track and see where the water is. Jeff Mosing and Eric Foss in the #56 Murillo Racing Mercedes going for it as we are looking at TCR with Nick Looijmans chasing after Victor Gonzalez right now as we speak. The speed delta is just a second between the fastest GS and fastest TCR car. The #19 Aston Martin of Rory van der Steur is monstering the identical Aston Martin of Hugh Plumb. Maybe van der Steur has more grip, more bite, from a softer setup. Hats off to van der Steur Racing and rebuilding their car as well as the team growing in leaps and bounds moving from TCR to GS. Rory's father was an American Le Mans Series driver in the 2000s.
Jenson Altzman in the #13 Ford Mustang along with everyone else is reading the race track. Preserve the tires and play the long game even if there is no more rain. Keep the tread blocks as cool as possible. van der Steur tries the outside. Watch the water over those painted curbs. That is slick as anything. Watch the track limits beyond the curbing in turns one, eight, and ten. Jesse Lazare is motoring in the #69 McLaren Artura GT4. Lazare sharing with Alex Filsinger. Jeff Mosing monstering Robert Megennis to the inside at the toe of The Boot.
Megennis handling on a knife's edge and now, van der Steur tries a move in the heel of The Boot. Not quite working out just yet. Mosing gives a spot to Bryce Ward. No more rain on track. Things are now beginning to dry out unlike the deluge we saw in a chunk of the qualifying session for the WeatherTech Championship this morning that cancelled GTP qulifying. Oh dear. The #71 Rebel Rock Racing Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R has spun. That is the car of Frank DePew and Robin Liddell and he is back underway with no damage.
Meanwhile, the battle of the Aston Martin's resumes in earnest, look. In TCR we see Mat Pombo leading Harry Gottsacker by 1.1 seconds. Honda vs. Hyundai. The rest of the order is Bryan Ortiz, Mason Filippi, Chris Miller, Taylor Hagler, Nick Looijmans, Gavin Ernstone, Victor Gonzalez, and Roy Block. The battle at the top of the shop remains hot and heavy between the two Aston Martin's and the Mercedes as well as the Mustang. In fact, Kenny Murillo, I think he has made good his escape over the others as now we see a flat left front tire for the #33 Hyundai Elantra N TCR of Harry Gottsacker sharing with Robert Wickens.
#33 is in the lane for slick tires. That one had a shredded left front tire though. Robert Wickens won this race last year alongside Mark Wilkins in TCR. The track is still damp. The tires will take a while to get temperature in the tires. What kind of lap times will Harry Gottsacker be able to cut? This will tell other teams in Grand Sport and TCR what the tire deal wll be. The ideal situation is to get to halfway and do it on one stop but if the track dries, your one stop strategy goes out the window. Mat Pombo leads Bryan Ortiz now by 3.6 seconds as Murillo Racing is in the lane now to swap to slick tires. The old rain boots are coming off the car.
This is a thirsty fuel track at The Glen. So it will be risky on fuel compared to the tire strategy. That was a slow stop at Murillo Racing! Oh my! Mat Pombo leading in TCR in the new Honda Civic FL5. The pavement on the road is beginning to get lighter. What caused the trouble for the Hyundai with Harry Gottsacker at the wheel of it? There are drive time limits and fuel numbers to hit. Everything was soaked when WeatherTech Championship qualifying was cancelled. They are really hoping for something for Mario Biundo, team owner.
Mario Biundo also drives himself in another TCR championship here stateside. A rain tire going away is a terrible thing to deal with as we see more TCR cars hitting the lane. This is the #98 Hyundai Elantra N TCR of Mark Wilkins and Mason Filippi. Change the tires over because those tread blocks on the wets will be separating and really squirming around. That creates heat in the tires like taking a coat hanger and bending it back and forth. Kenny Murillo now in the lane as Hugh Plumb and Rory van der Steur both stay on track.
Murillo still believes he is the guinea pig for the Michelin slick tires. More fuel in the tank as well. Robert Megennis has brought the #95 Turner Motorsports BMW M4 GT4 in the lane as well for fuel and slick tires. How will he handle on slicks on a dry track? He was like a cat on a tin roof in the wet. Great to see Gavin Ernstone and company back with Jon Morley. They will only do two or three of the next races. The RFID readers have been hit and Kenny Murillo has tagged them. I think that was a support board and hopefully not the computer boxes.
If you mess up the tire reader it is coming out of your budget. Rory van der Steur now in the lane for fuel and tires as well. Five lug nut wheels on GT4 and TCR cars. It is not a center locking nut like the prototypes and the GT3 cars use or even the Gen 7 NASCAR Cup cars like that experimental one we saw at Le Mans a few weekends ago. Honda #37 in the lane from the class lead in TCR. Mat Pombo staying at the wheel doing a double stint. The Honda FL5 Civic's thrive in the rain. Front wheel drive for TCR and rear wheel drive for GT4.
Oh dear! The #19 has spun! No contact with anything. Focus forward. Let's see. In replay, he got tipped by Jrff Mosing, tucking in on hot tires and got spun around! He has to be fuming inside his helmet saying "I can't believe this happened again!" Hugh and Matt Plumb, Aston Martin #46 has just pitted. The sister Turner Motorsports BMW M4 GT4 is in the lane as well. Vincent Barletta and Robby Foley. Flat left front tire, too, look, for the #5 Alfa Romeo Giulietta TCR with Roy Block at the wheel of it. He shares of course with Tim Lewis. The team changes the tire and he is back underway.
We are definitely seeing class overlap now between the GS and TCR fields here at The Glen. Oh no! Another accident! The Nolasport Porsche Cayman and the Winward Mercedes have come together! The #47 Nolasport Porsche Cayman has gotten the worst of it and the #95 Turner Motorsports BMW M4 GT4 has picked up shrapnel! Full Course Yellow. Full Course Yellow. We are under Full Course Yellow. In replay, contact is made spinning the Porsche into the Armco and the Mercedes crunches into the opposite guardrail. Ouch!
Barely half an hour on the board and we are seeing carnage and calamity in Michelin Pilot Challenge at Watkins Glen already, early doors. Game over for the winners on the street circuit at Detroit, the duo of Bryce Ward and Daniel Morad and for the Nolasport Porsche of Elliott Skeer and Adam Adelson. We have seen Adelson and Skeer successful in a GT3 Porsche in another championship, in SRO competition. But no luck for them in GT4 in Michelin Pilot Challenge this afternoon. I told you we would have a mixed candy dish and we do. We have the two Murillo Racing Mercedes cars second and third.
But, the leader now is the Riley Motorsports #14 Toyota Supra with Alfredo Najri at the wheel of it sharing with Thiago Camillo. The two drivers both from central and South America. Najri from the Dominican Republic and Camillo, the Brazilian. I think Bryce Ward broke a toe link on the Mercedes. So, the Detroit winners are out of this one here at Watkins Glen. Game over. But there is no blame. It is clearly just a racing deal. Jenson Altzman ran over a headlamp and Robert Megennis had some contact at the front and may have holed a radiator. The car maybe ran out of water which would be terrible.
That would be instant retirement. Pit stop time coming soon as we will see some drivers meeting their minimum drive time. But believe you me, this motor race is far from over. The field continues trundling 'round behind the safety car as we are near the 45-minute mark in the race. Would you like a sandwich? Nope. The action should be getting hot and heavy again real soon. This is no time for snacking and enjoying a cold drink. That said though we have takers in Grand Sport coming to the pit lane for driver changes. Gain track position by nailing the driver change. Thiago Camillo will take over the #14 Toyota Supra.
The #95 Turner Motorsports BMW handed off to Cameron Lawrence. No tires on the Murillo Mercedes'. Eric Foss now in the #56 and Christian Szymczak in the #72. It appears that Jesse Lazare in the #69 MIA McLaren is the erstwhile leader before we go back to green. Wholesale routine pit stops going on in TCR for fuel, tires, and driver changes. This place is going to the dogs. I have seen a lot of fans out at the track today at Watkins Glen with their canine pals. A handful of other cars coming through the pit lane for service. Turner BMW #95 is one of them.
In replay, he got squeezed in that incident we saw earlier between Bryce Ward and Elliott Skeer. Also in pit lane is the #69 Archangel Motorsports Aston Martin Vantage GT4 for a driver change it appears. That is the car of Billy Johnson and Todd Coleman. We are going to go back to green soon. We have an hour and five or six minutes to go. Harry Gottsacker and Robert Wickens are now back in the game in TCR. Jon Morley has taken over from Gavin Ernstone. Green flag. We are back to racing. Jesse Lazare leading the motor race ahead of Eric Filgueiras in the Porsche Cayman.
Filgueiras and co-driver Stevan McAleer are on full attack mode. Filgueiras in the car right now, coming off two runner-up finishes, second in the points standings. The sun is popping out on a dry track and oh my goodness! Big damage to the #27 Lone Star Racing Mercedes! Scott Andrews... wallop! He has smashed the barrier! Game over for Andrews and co-driver Anton Dias Perera. In replay, the #39 CarBahn with Peregrine Racing Porsche Cayman was also involved in this mighty crackup.
It was the #46 that got into the #39. Matt Plumb was the villain of the peace there. Short Full Course Yellow as we come close to the halfway mark. Day done for the #27. A drive through penalty assessed to the #33 Hyundai Elantra for Bryan Herta Autosport for working on the car outside the pit box. The car is good according to William Tally in the second #73 LA Honda World Honda Civic FL5. They ended up at the back of the pack in qualifying and they dodged the carnage early doors. They just have to roll with it on a wet setup and that is indeed what they've done.
Robert Megennis says things were troubling with the TCR cars getting in the way of the Grand Sport machines and drivers were being too aggressive. Megenniss slammed on the brakes and caught the nose. They are at the back of the pack with Cameron Lawrence now driving working their way forward after the damage. The tire was rubbing but that Michelin Pilot is holding air it seems. Working a hammer into car repairs is old school motor racing. That is what the British drivers call the Birmingham Screwdriver. The safety crews are attending to he stopped car #43. That is the BMW M4 GT4 in the hands of Sean Quinlan and Greg Liefooghe for Steven Cameron Racing which is going up on the rollback.
I wonder what happened. It looks like some damage t the rear left corner but also could have suffered mechanical problems. In replay, it is hard to tell what happened as we were watching from the Toyota Supra's onboard camera. But it is game over for BMW #43. That car has had enough for one day. Less than an hour to go as we still circulate under Full Course Yellow but should be back to green soon. Quite the variety is highlighted in cars and manufacturers here in Michelin Pilot Challenge of course as it will be in the WeatherTech Championship for the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen tomorrow, especially with the return after 30 years of the fabulous IMSA Grand Touring Prototypes.
We will have all six hours of the WeatherTech Championship race covered wall to wall for you tomorrow, here on Endurance... The Sports Car Racing Blog. So, stay tuned for that. We are now ready to go back to green here in Michelin Pilot Challenge. No stop and driver change yet for the RS1 (RennSport1) Porsche Cayman team yet. They are on the back foot. The top three are coming in to do the driver change. It is an early stop for the McLaren pitting early. Hopefilly they can bring it home. There are some damp places off line here at The Glen. I think most of the track is drying.
Foley on Szymczak look, towards the Bus Stop and makes the pass and now, Jenson Altzman nearly tags Christian Szymczak! That could have been ugly! Lots of damp places in the Outer Loop! My gosh! This is remarkable stuff! Jeepers creepers! Thiago Camillo now in the #14 Toyota Supra of course. They too have a fast race car and Austin McCusker now at the wheel of the #19 van der Steur Aston Martin. Cameron Lawrence is also beginning to motor after an extra pit stop. Lawrence is flying.
Owen Trinkler, too, now at the wheel of the #46 Team TGM Aston Martin and Robert Wickens is now in the pit lane for a penalty and has to claw back. He won though, last year, and did after some may have doubted him. Robin Liddell now doing all he can to gain time and he is a monster in the wet but it is now dry. If it had stayed wet, Robin Liddell really could have been in it this afternoon. Robby Foley now leads Christian Szymczak and Stevan McAleer is now at the wheel of the #28 RS1 Porsche Cayman and clawing his way back through the GS pack.
Jon Morley is now passing the #91 Hyundai Elantra and decides discretion is the better pater of valor passing Tyler Maxson and going after Chad Gilsinger in the #89 HART (Honda America Racing Team) Honda Civic TCR. Tyler Maxson is another talented driver in the #91 Hyundai Elantra, the other van der Steur Racing entry. Camillo, Lawrence, Trinkler, third, fourth, and fifth, with Robby Foley now in the #96 Turner Motorsports BMW M4 GT4 sharing with Vinny Barletta, at the top of the shop.
Kenny Murillo survived his stint and says that the Mercedes AMG GT4 is a dream to drive and they have figured out the tricky conditions, running their own race and so on. In TCR, Dennis DuPont is leading over Michael Lewis. Audi vs. Hyundai. Rockwell Autosport Development vs. Bryan Herta Autosport with 45 minutes of racing left. It could be squeaky, squeaky time on fuel mileage before this motor race is done and dusted. Trouble for the leader in TCR! We were just talking about them! Ugh! Commentator's curse! Maybe he is trying to reverse into a safe haven. In replay, he suddenly slowed, losing drive on the #15 Audi RS3 LMS TCR.
The driveline is toasted. It just won't go. Thank you very much, and good night. This will throw the cat among the pigeons in this case. Okie dokie then. A good pass by the #14 Toyota Supra on the #95 BMW M4 GT4. Riley Motorsports vs. Turner Motorsports. That was a wild replay. More debris on the road, too, look. That is a piece of crumpled bodywork. Hard to tell where it came from. Now, the #15 Audi is going to trundle its way back to the pits. Fans still here enjoying the motor race this afternoon including the ones we talked about earlier with their dogs.
The cars continue to circulate behind the safety car once more. Hoping to go back to green soon as we have just about a half hour of racing to go before we see the checkered flag here this evening. In spite of the yellows, this has been a jolly good motor race for the most part. Who has the fuel? Who has the tires? Who has the car? Who has the talent? Robby Foley leading overall and in Grand Sport but the sister car of Cameron Lawrence has more fuel and so does Owen Trinkler and Billy Johnson. Green flag again. Go, go, go guys. Let's finish this motor race.
Spencer Pumpelly and Billy Johnson side by side and both looking racy. Both very experienced drivers and here comes Austin McCusker. Cameron Lawrence gets nerfed by Thiago Camillo. Camillo has dirt on his tires or has cut one down. Robin Liddell moves by and Billy Johnson wants a bite of the cherry as well, look. Cameron Lawrence is to Camillo's flank, and crunch! He goes up and over the curb through that argy bargy. Damage to the right rear and Camillo could be dropping like a stone. If you give it to someone, the other driver will give it back to you, according to Race Director Beaux Barfield.
Lawrence is owed one after the BMW was destroyed in taht Detroit crash about three weeks ago. Michael Lewis in the #1 Bryan Herta Autosport Hyundai leading TCR but has Tim Lewis in the #5 Alfa Romeo and the #61 Audi of Jon Morley going for it and Morley goes with the Alfa Romeo and they drop the #1 Hyundai back to third place. Tyler Maxson applying the blowtorch to Michael Lewis as well, look. How will all this shemozzle shake out? The heat is increasing as the track is drying out. 26 minutes left on the board and lots more racing yet to come.
Good battle here featuring the two Turner Motorsports BMW's in first and third and the car at the end of that train is Robin Liddell in the #71 Rebel Rock Racing Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R looking to get back on the lead lap. He wants a yellow. Billy Johnson in the #88 Archangel Motorsports Aston Martin GT4 is really going for it as well as we watch Chad McCumbee, doing everything with being a driver and a team owner, winning a Michelin Pilot Challenge championship alongside Stevan McAleer who is a co-owner of the Mustang team, car #13.
Morley in the fight against Maxson., Maxson slams the door in his face. Not much speed differential between GS and TCR here at The Glen. Moving in response is a no no. You can't make a separate move after your fellow driver behind you does so. Trouble for the #37 Honda! Ryan Eversley at the wheel of it. The left front smoking and he has whacked the wall at the toe of The Boot. 22 minutes now remaining and we see Christian Szymczak the meat in the BMW sandwich. Also, trouble for Hyundai. Michael Lewis locks horns with Ryan Eversley, and... ker-runch!
Full Course Yellow. This is going to be the shootout to the end. Big damage to the left front of the Hyundai. This TCR scrap was getting way too spicy. That is a spot of grass tracking turned into a crash, bang, wallop, getting really feisty. These are two quality drivers and you don't see those two blokes getting into fisticuffs like that. Well, not fisticuffs, but that correction was enough to lock horns with Eversley and that was no different than the shemozzle we saw earlier with the #47 Nolasport Porsche Cayman and the #57 Winward Racing Mercedes AMG GT4. BMW 1-2. The #72 Murillo Racing Mercedes has slid to third spot.
Will Turner Motorsports have their favorite tacos for dinner tonight if they win and pull off this 1-2? We'll have to find out. Just about 15 minutes to settle this. This is going to be a shootout at the OK Corral which these Michelin Pilot Challenge events usually are when it comes down to crunch time. The cards and the money are on the table. As the late Kenny Rogers sang in his song "The Gambler", never count the money when you are sitting at the table. That's true. You've got to seal the deal first. The skies here at The Glen almost looked like nighttime and the rain was tipping down.
But if you have saved everything for the end, now it is time to spend it. Todd Coleman says he, Billy Johnson, and Archangel Motorsports need a large slice of luck, but they want to go for it. Vincent Barletta is coached by Robby Foley to stay in a rhythm and hit target lap times of 2:13-2:14. We have a 1-2 for Turner Motorsports currently. Tim Lewis aboard the #5 KMW Motorsports with TMR Engineering Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce TCR leading the TCR division. We are set to go back to green. Green flag! Turner Motorsports still leading. Can Robin Liddell do anything with Billy Johnson?
Robin Liddell wants to get his lap back. That's for dead sure. Stevan McAleer in tenth trying to move up the order, sitting second in points in the #28 RS1 Porsche Cayman sharing with Eric Filgueiras. Robin Liddell slides up out of the way and lets Billy Johnson through. Drive through penalty for the #1 Hyundai for incident responsibility as Mark Wilkins in the #98 sister Bryan Herta Autosport Hyundai goes off the rad and clatters the fence, Mike LaMarra not realizing poor old Wilkins is there and that was completely accidental. Not deliberate at all. Chad Gilsinger in trouble too, with a cut down tire in the #89 HART Honda and more calamity1 Chad McCumbee spins the #13 Mustang GT4.
Wilkins is dead in the water. Is someone throwing banana peels on the road? I wonder. The #98 Hyundai has holed a radiator and has lots of damage. Significant toe out and damage too for Chad McCumbee in the #13 McCumbee McAleer Motorsports Ford Mustang GT4. Full Course Yellow. Time will be limited to get the stricken cars to a safe haven and back to green. In replay, #73 tags the #89. Two Honda's clattering each other and the #89 had something weird happening and Chad McCumbee clattered Stevan McAleer, his team co-owner! Oh my! Turner Motorsports run 1-2 with #96 ahead of #95 which replicates their Sebring result from back in March.
The #98 Hyundai will be put back on the rollback. The Alfa team in TCR who also won at Sebring are also looking for their second win of the year. We will have a sprint to the finish. Stay with us, please. Don't run to the refrigerator yet. Safety car lights off. We are going to go back to green flag racing. Chad McCumbee trundled his Ford Mustang back to the pit lane and we should have a couple laps left with four minutes left on the clock. Tim Lewis Jr. in the #5 Alfa Romeo may be able to pull away but he is going to have his hands full with Jon Morley.
But it sounds like he has some kind of popping and banging sound in the transmission when he grabs a gear. That's strange. Green flag! Foley controls the restart with Cameron Lawrence as the wingman. Lawrence and co-driver Robert Megennis have not won yet this year. Mikey Taylor moves past Jon Morley, monstering Tyler Maxson for P2. Down into turn five and into the laces of The Boot, Christian Szymczak is being monstered by Todd Coleman! Coleman has the preferred line and makes his move as poor old Szymczak are losing places hand over fist.
A brilliant day for Owen Trinkler and Ted Giovanis in the #64 TGM Aston Martin. Wow. Mikey Taylor has a huge lunge and Tyler Maxson runs wide! Jon Morley stalled out his speed. TGM really going for it. Owen Trinkler has Billy Johnson right on his six and Billy Johnson dives to the inside! He is going to go for it as Trinkler defends! Wow! Aston Martin on Aston Martin. This is how you race. Be respectful. Scrap, but be respectful. Trinkler was right there, Johnson tried to send it, could not make the delivery.
Checkered flag. Turner Motorsports 1-2. Robby Foley and Vincent Barletta are the first repeat winners of 2023 in Grand Sport and the #5 Alfa Romeo team of Tim Lewis Jr. and Roy Block also win their second race of the year in TCR. Turner Motorsports won here in 2004 19 years ago.
