Last week the FIA and ACO announced the groundwork for their new LMP1
replacement, the “Hypercar” class, which would begin racing at the start
of the 2020-2021 WEC season. The effort is to drive costs down for
WEC’s top class, so they essentially took a step back in time and
modernized the rulebook from the late 90’s that featured the wild LMGTP
cars. The goal is to have drastic budget reductions from LMP1
competitors where the entire season budget would fall from over
$100,000,000 to roughly $30,000,000 for a two-car program. The new
Hypercar ruleset, in theory, will do that and it’s a great step forward
for rebuilding the LMP1 class, though it’s still not guaranteed that
McLaren, Ferrari, Hyundai and other manufacturers will jump in. So what
does it do for, or to, IMSAs feature class, DPi?
