Winner & Highlights of the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship FCP Euro Northeast Grand Prix presented by Liqui Moly

Welcome to the Berkshire Hills of northwestern Connecticut and the fabled Lime Rock Park circuit that has been one of the homes of motor racing in the northeastern United States for the better part of six decades, since opening in 1957.  Today we are here to cover the GT Daytona classes of the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship, in the first of two standalone races for them in 2023.  GTD Pro and GTD, all GT3 spec cars from different manufacturers, with some of the top drivers in the world set for competition on this small, tight, mile and a half circuit with seven corners.  A field of 20 cars is lined up and set to go with pole position going to the #23 GTD Pro class Heart of Racing Aston Martin Vantage GT3 being shared by Ross Gunn, the talented Englishman, and his Spanish co-driver Alex Riberas.

Again, the situation here is that all the cars are GT3 spec but the driver ratings are different between many of the pairings lined up for this 2 hour and 40-minute event.  Welcome to the bullring.  When the playing field gets smaller, the intensity of the game or the race ratchets up.  A mile and a half of asphalt with seven corners.  Are you ready?  We're ready!  This is the FCP Euro Northeast Grand Prix presented by Liqui Moly as we join Brian Till and Calvin Fish in the commentary box.  In GTD Pro, it is a battle between Lexus, Mercedes, Corvette, and Porsche.  In GTD regular, Paul Miller Racing lead the title.  Lamborghini have unveiled their new GTP contender for next year.

We won't see GTP until Road America next time out.  In GTD Pro, the Heart of Racing and Ross Gunn set a blistering effort after their big accident two weeks ago at Mosport Park in Canada.  No new car blues for the Heart of Racing team.  They are looking for their first win of 2023 after scoring a runner-up last year.  In GTD, Mike Skeen is on pole in the #32 Korthoff Motorsports Mercedes AMG GT3 with the #70 Inception Racing McLaren 720S GT3 with Fredrik Schandorff starting the car, sharing with Brendon Iribe.

Track position is key, it is what everyone is going for on this tight, twisting course, with only a couple of straightaways but the backstretch, the Paul Newman straightaway is barely a straight line.  We are getting set to go racing.  We are round seven of 11.  Hawksworth and Barnicoat in the #14 Lexus in GTD Pro hold a 96-point lead over everyone else in the class.  Well, 96 points over second spot.  This course is predominantly right hand corners.  Passing is at a premium.  Manage the left side tires, go for track position and go for the undercut and pit two laps earlier than you normally would.  But 20 cars on a mile and a half track means traffic, traffic, traffic.

The lap times are well under a minute in duration.  Work with the traction control and other driving aids.  Look for an hour and 20 minute run on the tires, half the race!  Amazing!  Heart of Racing have pace.  No victories or top finishes.  Can they do it today?  We'll see.  Down the hill they come.  We have a green flag and we're underway!  Great start by Gunn over Hawksworth as they scramble through turn one.  Antonio Garcia moving up already and Fred Schandorff tries to get inside of Patrick Pilet.  Watch out for the uphill.  McLaren, bang, into the Mercedes AMG GT3.  More touchy touchy through West Bend!  This is going to be a wrestling match!

Down the Paul Newman straightaway and intot he braking zone.  Now, we see a battle of the BMW's.  Turner Motorsports vs. Paul Miller Racing.  You will see different classes based on the drivers but all the same cars.  Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, and more.  Madison Snow coming off victory last time at Mosport in Canada, at CTMP.  Snow is pushing already and Frankie Montecalvo in the #12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus being muscled out of the way by a couple of BMW's including the #95 in the hands of BMW veteran Bill Auberlen and the sister car of Patrick Gallagher.  How do you tell a racing driver to be patient and not burn the tires off it?

The WeatherTech #79 Mercedes AMG GT3 has been passed, Jules Gounon at the wheel of it.  Down the downhill they go and onto the Sam Posey straightaway.  Conserve fuel and tires.  A yellow flag will compress the pack.  Jack Hawksworth has the advantage.  Corvette Racing have won this race six times but Antonio Garcia has only done so once, sharing today with Jordan Taylor in the #3 Corvette C8.R.  The Mercedes camp are trying to survive, the WeatherTech team.  A pit stop will cost you a lap if you aren't careful trundling down the lane at 60 clicks.  Madison Snow wrestling with Patrick Gallagher.  The BMW boys are out for blood.

Two rival teams for the same brand.  Gallagher is being harried by both blue and yellow Turner Motorsports BMW's.  Think big picture because Paul Miller Racing are ahead in the championship by 212 points.  Patrick Gallagher in his first full season in GT3 and in the WeatherTech Championship.  He has run in GT4 in Michelin Pilot Challenge as well.  Now, after this race, do not go anyplace because we have the second VP Challenge event coming up and the Michelin Pilot Challenge event too.  Lots of racing.  Lots of content.  All on Saturday because as mentioned, no racing on Sundays, to give the residents of Lime Rock and Lakeville, Connecticut, a day of rest and relaxation after going to the races today.

What a gorgeous area of Connecticut, and this track.  It is very unique and much smoother than it used to be in the late 1980s when IMSA GTP 1.0 and GT cars came here.  Ross Gunn has great pace leading Jack Hawksworth by 2.2 seconds.  Madison Snow is frustrated trying to figure out a solution to Patrick Gallagher's riddle.  Gallagher sharing with BMW factory driver Robby Foley.  Both former competitors as well in Mazda MX5 Cup.  Gallagher has an engineering degree from Ohio State University.  The BMW's naturally have understeer.  Too much understeer is a bear even though the car is comfortable for amateur drivers.

The setups can be difficult on the BMW.  The wheelbases, the engine location, the engine displacement and type.  More amateur drivers have concern over the rear end of the car stepping out and sometimes the front washing out.  The trouble is that the left front tires get pasted around this place.  Alan Brynjolfsson chasing Sheena Monk.  Brynjolfsson sharing the #77 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3R sharing with Trent Hindman.  Monk in the #66 Gradient Racing Acura NSX GT3 sharing with Katherine Legge.  Next up, the #80 AO Racing Porsche 911 GT3R, "Rexy" the racing dinosaur.  Alec Udell next up in the #92 Kelly Moss with Riley Porsche 911 GT3R sharing with Julien Andlauer.

Porsche's had 20 kilograms, 44 pounds of weight, taken out.  This has not been a performance increase yet.  But it could be as we get deeper into the race.  Hyett is chasing Udell, both thesr drivers extremely talented.  Porsche's long run pace is going to be something to keep an eye on.  The long run pace is like a football game where one team is more physical than the other.  Russell Ward also having a good run in the #57 Winward Racing Mercedes AMG GT3 in GT Daytona.  Engineers and strategists working out the best ways to win because as mentioned, in racing, winning is all that matters.  Losing races means nothing and is a bear to deal with.

No different than stick and ball sports, baseball, football, soccer, whatever.  Alan Brynjolfsson still pushing Sheena Monk.  She's withstanding the pressure, sharing the car with Katherine Legge.  Katherine Legge has won with an Acura NSX GT3 and won in GT Daytona in IMSA before.  They are taking a great approach on and off track.  Brynjolfsson wide onto the Paul Newman straightaway.  Traction Control helps but does not make you avoid going off the road.  Jarett Andretti in the #94 Andretti Autosport Aston Martin Vantage GT3 sharing with Gabby Chaves.  This is their second start after Laguna Seca in May.

These boys are drinking from a firehose, but they are getting everything they can out of every session.  Jack Hawksworth and Ben Barnicoat are playing the waiting game in GTD Pro in the #14 Lexus RC F GT3.  Ten minutes minimum drive time in GTD Pro and 45 minutes for GTD.  Go early, or go late, or split the difference.  Everyone on edge on pit lane with their strategy because the cars are so similarly paced.  GTD drive time is 45 minutes and so the GTD Pro teams will pit a wee bit earlier for track position especially if we get a Full Course Yellow.  Don't get stymied in the queue.  Focus forward while the teams are back timing the event.

The gamblers are already laying their cards on the table.  Don't count the money yet.  #14 and #79 to the lane.  Two tires for #79 and four for #14 and here comes the #23 as the dominos fall.  Splitting the race in half you are looking still at two 77-minute fuel stints I think.  Save fuel and save tires at the same time.  Pitting early for a short fuel fill will allow you to stay on the lead lap.  Corvette Racing #3 are in the lane for four tires.  The Corvette runs well on these high tire degradation circuits.  21 seconds in the lane, or in the box.  Half a fuel load.  40 seconds is a full fuel load.  Be quick on the draw with the tire changes, with the rattle guns.

Antonio Garcia stays in front of Ross Gunn.  A good move in the downhill for Jules Gounon moving past Jarett Andretti.  Driver changes cannot take place just yet.  It is so hard to pass whether you have a tire advantage or not.  I know.  I know.  The strategy talk is boring.  But it is such a necessity in one of these races.  Leading overall, Frenchman Patrick Pilet, staying out in the #9 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3R sharing with the Austrian, Klaus Bachler.  Pilet is told to run hard and long and build up a gap between here and the pit cycle, the pit window opening.  Pilet is stretching the lead out while trying to save petrol and tires.  A juggling act with three balls in the air.  That's tough.

Mike Skeen aboard the #32 Korthoff Motorsports Mercedes AMG GT3 earned his first GT Daytona pole and now leads the class in the race ahead of Fredrik Schandorff.  Skeen sharing with Canadian Mikael Grenier.  Oh no!  We have a massive crash in Big Bend between Jarett Andretti and Alan Metni!  Ouch!  Andretti is buried in the tires!  Metni trundling around to the pit lane.  This is the #91 sister Kellymoss Porsche 911 GT3R sharing with Kay van Berlo.  The medical team is on site checking in with Jarett Andretti to see that he is OK.  This is not the first time we've seen a shemozzle at Big Bend, turn one.  He ran out of road in the middle of the turn.

Metni had a solid performance in qualifying.  He is a talented Am champion in Lamborghini Super Trofeo and has run in Porsche Cup North America as well in recent years.  We are under Full Couese Yellow as Mike Skeen continues in the lead.  Metni trundling his way to the pit lane and again, it is game over for the Aston Martin #94 for Andretti Autosport.  Metni misses his braking point by 50 yards, and... boom.  Right into the back of the Aston.  Metni's bonnet is open and blocking the windscreen.  He can't see a thing and the tire is flapping as well, like a sawblade.

Pit lane now open.  Inception McLaren have pitted.  Ftedrik Schandorff at the controls.  Tires and fuel only.  Ditto for Mike Skeen in the #32 Mercedes and we are just shy of the 45-minute minimum drive time.  With the #91 car the pit crew are replacing the bumper and the splitter.  The field is behind the Acura Integra Type S safety car.  Green flag again, now.  Ross Gunn leads and we have some serious hip and shoulder into turn one between Klaus Bachler, Patrick Gallagher, and Madison Snow!  Madison Snow is pressing and I don't have to tell you, hard.  Someone off and on at the Paul Newman straight!  Yikes!  Lots of argy bargy there, look.

No rest for the weary save for the front stretch.  Hope nobody is there at the other end of the dust storm as Katherine Legge is pressing Seb Priaulx.  Trent Hindman is being monstered by the sister #92 Kellymoss Porsche and Brendon Iribe ahead there.  Iribe now is being harried by Trent Hindman it looks like.  Ross Gunn leading the motor race and now, Antonio Garcia is giving Jack Hawksworth all he can handle.  No one doing anybody any favors.  A drive through penalty is issued to the #79 WeatherTech Mercedes for leaving the lane with equipment attached to the car, and the #78 Forte Racing Lamborghini with Loris Spinelli, he had a penalty for improper refueling time, too short a fuel time, too fast on fuel flow rate.

Spinelli sharing with Misha Goikhberg.  The Italian and the Canadian.  The traffic is bonkers currently.  Trent Hindman, Julien Andlauer, and more.  Seb Priaulx in the fight too, look.  Brendon Iribe in the McLaren is the cork in the bottle.  Brendon Iribe has become a great driver, racing any kind of car he can get into in GT racing.  Seb Priaulx is flying and so is Trent Hindman.  1 hour and 45 minutes to go.  So we are nearly an hour into the race today.  In the meantime, Madison Snow leads GT Daytona having moved up eight places while Hindman up five, Gallagher, Ward, and Legge, all up three spots from where they started.

Find a way forward.  This is a team sport.  That is what makes sports car racing so wonderful.  We are solidly an hour into the race now.  Ross Gunn and Roman De Angelis have had the track a Lime Rock circled as the Aston Martin thrives on this short circuit with their lack of downforce compared to the other GT3 cars.  Mechanical grip helps to save the tires so they don't get ratty.  If Gunn is vulnerable before the final stops, he will have to protect the gap to Jack Hawksworth in second in the Lexus and third place, Antonio Garcia in the #3 Chevrolet Corvette C8.R, known colloquially as "The King of Spain".  Garcia right on Hawksworth's six.

I wonder if the handling is going away on the Lexus even with good weather.  The biggest factor for the tires has to be the track temperature.  Track temperature is the biggest factor as they fly into West Bend, lifting the throttle, getting a launch, and maybe playing a game of chicken.  Penalty for the #1 Paul Miller Racing BMW for contact in the lane with the #32 Korthoff Mercedes!  Oy yoy yoy!  The points gap will be cut down to 56 points between the #1 and the #27 Aston Martin.  Madison Snow is told not to worry and to focus forward and keep going.  Bryan Sellers has not done his stint yet.

Trouble for the #57 Winward Racing Mercedes AMG GT3 off the road in Big Bend.  This is the GTD class car driven by Russell Ward.  They almost won last year but the fuel pump broke right at the end of the event.  Patrick Gallagher running second in GT Daytona right now 1.9 seconds behind Roman De Angelis.  Bill Auberlen runs fourth in class at Turner Motorsports' home event.  Don't count your tacos until it is all over.  Tacos?  Yum.  No chickens, I guess.  Track position is critical.  Bill Auberlen will hand off the #95 Turner Motorsports BMW to Chandler Hull for the next stint.

Alex Riberas is confident about racing at Lime Rock and Ross Gunn is doing a fabulous job even though they lost spots on the pit sequences.  They are going to be squeezed on fuel towards the end.  We have been racing now for an hour and a half and have less than ten minutes to halfway.  Heart of Racing team boss Ian James says the car and the team have always done so well here at Lime Rock.  Today is Ian James' birthday and so is our pal on commentary, Calvin Fish.  Happy Birthday, guys.  Scott Dixon, I believe also has a birthday today.  Ross Gunn leads and now, Klaus Bachler is catching Antonio Garcia for third spot.

The new Porsche 992 generation 911 GT3R, some of the teams are still trying to find the sweet spot.  It does not have the straightaway speed of the old car, the 991 II.  Ross Gunn leads the motor race here at the FCP Euro Northeast Grand Prix.  There was a pit lane penalty for the #1 BMW as we ta;ked about an in replay, tails away, the #32 gets clipped by the BMW at pit exit.  They will have a mountain to climb in the final hour and 20 minutes, the second half of the race as we are passing halfway in a minute or so.  PMR pitted again and need less petrol to get to the end of the race.

Another Full Course Yellow could help.  Ross Gunn now leads Jack Hawksworth by 4.6 seconds.  If you are on the inside there is no overlap here at Lime Rock.  Gain track position any way possible.  Stay in the fight no matter what.  Be consistent to go for it and win championships.  Heart of Racing and Ross Gunn have found the consistency so far today.  We have an hour and 14 minutes left on the board looking at pit strategy for the leaders.  Down the Sam Posey straightaway and Garcia goes off and back on kicking up the dust!  Gunn leads by six plus seconds.  We are now in the window to stop for fuel and get home.

Do you risk it?  Who will blink first?  Gunn still in the race lead.  Hawksworth went off the road and so has Garcia.  Hawksworth and Corvette of Garcia to the lane for the undercut.  Did #3 save more fuel than #14?  Jordan Taylor now into the #3 Corvette with a full load of fuel and new tires.  Vasser Sullivan Lexus waiting on fuel and the sister car is now in the lane too.  That was a lengthy stop for the #3 and he got boxed in.  #23 in the lane from the overall lead.  Alex Riberas will take the car to the checkered flag.  This is a long stop for a full load of fuel and he is down and away.

Ben Barnicoat will be reeling in Alex Riberas and now, the #9 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche is in the lane for new tires and fuel and a driver change.  Klaus Bachler will take the car home after Patrick Pilet has finished his stint.  Marco Sorensen takes over the #27 Heart of Racing Aston Martin in GTD from Roman De Angelis.  You can't short fill by much after doing bucketloads of fuel saving.  We don't anticipate a bunch of yellows because of just the production cars racing today with no prototypes to worry about.  An update, the prototypes will be testing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway next week including my pals at Action Express.

Meantime, Jules Gounon in the #79 WeatherTech Mercedes is the erstwhile leader.  But this order after the pit stops is going to come out in the wash.  Gallagher to the lane for a slightly longer pit stop.  Julien Andlauer inherits second spot with more fuel in the tank.  Patrick Gallagher out, and into the car for the final stint is Robby Foley.  Big scrap here, look, between the #12 Lexus of Aaron Telitz getting a lap back from GTD leader Mike Skeen in the #32 Mercedes.  Pit lane will be closing.  Skeen followed by Auberlen and Priaulx.  Time to lay the cards on the table.  Will you pull out an ace?  No jokers.

We have a huge incident on track!  Brendon Iribe has stuffed it into the tire wall with massie skid marks!  I wonder if he was trying to get to the lane.  He is upset.  The door of the McLaren will not close and there's massive damage to the front.  He speared off into the tires and had no help whatsoever.  Boom!  He obliterates the tire barriers.  I think Iribe is mad at himself for making a mistake.  I am such a clown!  What did I do?!  It is very dirty offline as well.  It is a mega disappointment for Inception Racing with their global program, running in multiple championships, a successful businessman who won the Michelin Endurance Cup with the team in 2022.

Bill Auberlen will lose out with a closed pit lane and cycle to the tail end of the queue as Robby Foley got around Mikael Grenier.  Foley got the spot in the other lane and Grenier was too late to respond and Katherine Legge knew she wanted a bite of the cherry but was not close enough.  Robby Foley knows this is go time.  Make it happen.  This is big.  He had to go defensive immediately, move to the right side of the road, Grenier did, and then, Foley nipped him.  We are cleaning up the mess, removing the McLaren from the tire wall.

Alec Udell says that his co-driver Julien Andlauer is very quick, racing in many different championships.  It is Andlauer's first time at Lime Rock as the team is improving the car.  Their labors are bearing fruit.  He says drivers have had to be patient or force their rivals into a mistake through the traffic here at Lime Rock as we are set for sprint to the end.  53 minutes of racing left.  Andlauer is going to put all the chips on the table and Marco Sorensen also debuting here at Lime Rock.  Sorensen is a former World Champion in GT racing.  Andlauer is a Porsche Carrera Cup Germany and Carrera Cup France champion as well.

The cleanup of the McLaren continues.  We are at mile and a half road course with seven corners, built in 1957 on what was a sand and gravel quarry and it is the third oldest track in the United States as far ad road racing.  No grandstands.  Sit on the hill in your lawn chair or on a blanket or something, and enjoy yourself.  This track is on the National Register of Historic Places.  Green flag!  Alex Riberas leading the motor race.  48 minutes to go.  Clean and heat the tires, get the debris off it.  Riberas is not letting the grass grow under his feet.

The #79 Mercedes is buried deep in the field.  Daniel Juncadella is right behind Katherine Legge, with that Mercedes 6.2 liter V8, roaring and thundering.  Jordan Taylor in the #3 Chevrolet Corvette C8.R is next in line and lost ground after stalling on pit exit.  Antonio Garcia says that the car is running well and the track position is critical.  They did not have it and have been hoping for mistakes from their rivals.  Something went wrong with the car stalling on the last pit stop.  45 minutes on a stint, and it sounds like Antonio Garcia is expecting a tough final stint.  He says they have pace on their own but following other cars is going to be a bit troublesome.

Garcia, patient.  The drivers want clean air and it is hard to come by.  Significant damage to the right front fender of the #9 Porsche.  Gear selection was the issue for Jordan Taylor on pit exit.  Why is this car not finding gear?  Push the clutch, throw the gear lever.  But not with one of these cars that has a paddle shift system on it.  Something glitching in the computer.  Riberas leading Barnicoat by 1.3 seconds.  I don't think a car will leave Lime Rock without a donut or a scrape on it.  43 minutes to go.  Trent Hindman has moved 11 places up from where he start.  Katerine Legge up seven, Julien Andluaer up six, Sorensen up three, and Telitz up one.

Hindman and Brynjolfsson are contenders for the GT Daytona win, a team at Wright Motorsports and Volt Racing that ran in Michelin Pilot Challenge for a number of years.  Team boss John Wright has years of experience fielding Porsche's in several endurance racing disciplines.  40 minutes of racing still to go.  Robby Foley also wants a slice of the pie here.  The #32 Korthoff Motorsports Mercedes has gone off the road at the right hand turn before the Paul Newman straight.  Mikael Grenier has been passed by Loris Spinelli.  I think Grenier lost it on his own.  The #12 Lexus had to clean grass out of the radiator.  In replay, ah, I heard a tap, a clunk.

Spinelli gave Skeen a nudge.  The stewards will be looking at that.  Speeding in the pit lane, now a stop + 60 seconds penalty for that for the #12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus.  Get your finger on the pit lane speed limiter.  Slow the car down before pushing the button.  Robby Foley a second and a half down on the top three in GTD, chasing Sorensen, Andlauer, and Hindman.  34 minutes to go.  Sorensen and Riberas both have their Aston Martin's in the lead of both classes.  Will this be a sweep for Heart of Racing?  Marco Sorensen is an Aston Martin factory driver, and ran with Corvette Racing in the IMSA enduros last year.  Sorensen is managed by Oliver Kristensen, son of the Le Mans legend Tom Kristensen, the nine-time Le Mans 24 Hour race winner.

Hindman is settling down, managing the tires, not forcing the issue, with a half an hour left on the board.  Riberas' lead is shrinking over Barnicoat.  27 minutes remaining.  What kind of Michelin tires does he have under him?  Barnicoat is just six tenths of a second down on Riberas as the clock is ticking before the race ends.  The Lexus RC F GT3 is long in the tooth.  They have a huge notebook to work with even though the car is as old as it is.  Bryan Sellers has moved back up into the top ten in GTD and can find more places before the race ends, seven seconds down on Sebastian Priaulx who is giving everything to chase down Katherine Legge.

Bryan Sellers is motoring and they will have 86 points in the lead on Sorensen and De Angelis with Montecalvo and Telitz 255 points down.  The points structure has been multiplied by ten about three years ago.  One bad day can bring everyone else back to the fight.  The right front fender is still giving trouble to the #9 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche but it is stable.  It won't fall off.  20 minutes left now as the margins are magnified.  Is anyone saving anything?  It is very possible.  But now it is go time.  Pull the pin soon.  Andlauer drifting through Big Bend.  He is reeling in Marco Sorensen.  Trent Hindman also in the picture.  Where can I pass?  Where do I have the advantage?  Where can I apply the pressure?

Time is of the essence in this race of the supercars.  15 minutes remaining.  Hindman has dropped back from Andlauer.  Trent Hindman hanging onto Julien Andlauer.  Andlauer told to push.  Go for it.  Push it.  OK.  I'll push it.  Aston Martin leading in both classes.  Daniel Juncadella is 21 seconds down on the GTD Pro leaders.  Andlauer though is glued right to the Aston Martin.  Riberas being reeled in by Barnicoat and Bachler, and Taylor are running hard as well.  You've run out of cards to play as the sand is speeding through the hourglass.  12 and a half minutes yields maybe 14 laps before the race is over.

Riberas can focus forward and manage his tires.  Having tires on the rear is a good thing so you can park it in the corners and then rocket away on exit.  The Aston Martin is quick and stable.  Barnicoat is waiting to pounce.  Vasser Sullivan will increase their points lead to 151 points over the new second place points runners, the #3 Corvette.  Julien Andlauer wants to get up there.  The stability through the high speed turns are what the Aston Martin's have to their advantage.  Andlauer, is he slowing up?  He is pressing the ABS in the braking zone.  Some hesitation on the right front allows Sorensen to get away.  Trent Hindman can't do anything with it, being chased by Robby Foley as Loris Spinelli has lost pace.  No evidence to penalize Spinelli.

He has dodged a massive bullet.  Loris Spinelli ran in SRO last year and he had four poles in a row in 2022.  He also has had great success in Lamborghini Super Trofeo.  Jordan Taylor off in the marbles trying to make his move on Klaus Bachler.  Pressing harder with less and less grip.  Bachler shortcutting the chicane!  Yikes!  That is a massive bump!  Jordan Taylor might actually have the speed, truly.  There is only one endurance round left in the series at Petit Le Mans for the final and Barnicoat runs deep into turn one!  He is scrambling and now, Bachler can pounce.  Riberas could be home and hosed.

The tire degradation makes you lose all kinds of grip.  Riberas is grinning like a Cheshire cat here.  He is extending the margin. Poor old Barnicoat clipped the curb and got into the ABS washing wide.  Thankfully he kept the car on the island.  Julien Andlauer, at 51.6 seconds has the fastest lap of the race.  Andlauer is fastest and he too has a loose right front fender.  Oh my!  That is not good.  Under braking there is force to pitch it forward.  Sorensen managing the gap as the clock is ticking.  When is it time to pull the pin from the grenade and launch the rocket?

Soft hands on the wheel, nursing the tires into the corners.  Inside two minutes remaining now.  The shortest track on the calendar.  From the shortest track to the longest at Road America in a few weeks.  White flag next time by.  Your tires can just fall off a cliff and you just don't know what on earth your tires are going to do.  But Riberas has it made in the shade and is cool as a cucumber.  Last year we saw drama on the last lap.  Will we see that again?  One lap left.  A mile and a half.  It is not over yet.  Riberas can breathe a couple times per lap.  Jordan Taylor though is reeling in Bachler but is too far back to send it.

Riberas through the downhill one final time.  They win at Lime Rock Park in GTD Pro!  In GTD, what will happen?  Heart of Racing does the sweep with Marco Sorensen!  Happy Birthday Ian James!  Riberas and Sorensen sweep!

Overall/GT Daytona Pro: #23 Riberas/Gunn     Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin Vantage GT3

GT Daytona: #27 De Angelis/Sorensen Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin Vantage GT3

The next race is in two weeks as all the classes with the prototypes and GT cars get back together at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, for the IMSA Sports Car Weekend.  We'll see you then.  But don't forget, we have more racing coming your way on this Saturday.  VP Sports Car Challenge race two and Michelin Pilot Challenge both still to come.  Bye for now.
